Adding .srt Files To Dvd Options

I have no trouble adding .avi files to toast and burning to DVD, however I have a .avi file which is in a foreign language and contains subtitles, the subtitles are in the same folder and end on .srt... However if I drag these to Toast it says they are an unsupported file type... Any ideas anyone?

Install Perian. Amongst its features, it enables QuickTime to read .srt files in combination with .avi files.
When Toast uses QuickTime decoding while encoding a DVD, with Perian it will also "burn" those subtitles onto the video. For this to work, the filenames have to match.

Can you explain exactly the procedure for doing this? If I have two files: "myMovie.avi" and "myMovie.srt", do I need to add the srt file to the "mix"? If so, how?

Just put them in the same folder. Then Perian will find the .srt.
You can check/"preview" this by playing the .avi in QuickTime Player.

As far as I can tell, the process presumes ISO 8859-1 (Western Latin 1) text encoding,
so you may get weird results for non-western languages.

i followed the instructions and added the folder with both the .avi and the .srt file, but still get the error message that the file format is not supported and therefore the .srt file can not be added.

i haven't tried to burn the movie yet, but does that mean that subtitles will get burned regardless the error message (and the not added .srt file)?

If you are creating a DVD-Video, you do not have to add the .srt file. You just want to make sure they are saved in the same folder on your hard drive.

Hi... Jumping in to an old post here because my question is an extension of this question. I have found Perian. It works great!! I'm thrilled. However, one movie that I want to add subtitles to, the subs are split into TWO .srt files. The file has to be the same name as the .avi file, I don't know how to properly add subtitles in this situation. Can you help?

If you have
- movie.part1.avi
- movie.part1.srt
- movie.part2.avi
- movie.part2.srt
then it would be obvious where each .srt belongs to.
If you have
- movie.total.avi
- movie.part1.srt
- movie.part2.srt
then you'll have to merge the .srt files. The timing in part 2 starts with 0:00:00, so you'll need an intelligent app to change the timing in the second part. I never had to do this, but this external forum describes it.

It's the second scenario, that's what has me stumped. I'll check out the forum for combining .srt files. thanks for the link.

I'm sorry, but I have tried every which way to make this work. I am using Toast 9 and I installed Perian but do not see where it is making any difference. What is it supposed to do? I have tried converting it to a DivX file and played it in Quicktime. I have burned it three times - twice as an .avi file and once as a DivX file -- and no subtitles.

What am I missing here?

Thank you for responding. I have made sure that the names line up exactly. When I play it in Quicktime, no subtitles. I have Quicktime Pro. It does not help. Under the "View" menu the option to view subtitles is not illuminated.

Hmm. Something's wrong then. Are you sure the subtitle file is in SubRip (.srt) format?

I have Quicktime Pro. It does not help.

This feature of Perian does not depend on Pro.

Under the "View" menu the option to view subtitles is not illuminated.

This is normal. That menu option is for a different type of subtitles.
Movie Inspector (Cmd-I) should show the Perian subs as 'Text Subtitle' in the Format section, together with the video and audio stream.

I don't think so. I believe I would have read reports about such an incompatibility if that were the case.

excellent advise here. I hope yocan help me. I am using the Roxio video copy and create program in easy media create 10 and have an avi movie not in english and a .srt file that I need to combine to get the Subs. how do
I do this in this program? I am using a PC running vista (don't laugh).
