CD
What wa smeant about the OSnys staying together was the Acrylic layer did NOT seperate from the foil layer, as it did with the Verbs. I was using Sonys for a several years and bought a 100 Verbs on sale and had to destroy a few (my choice, no fault of the media storage) and when I latched on to them with the players and twisted, the layers seperated. That never happened when ii did the same with the Sonys. That was what was meant. I worry, because I do not know how long the layers will stay together or why did it happen, is there air getting in there etc. Verbs have had good ratings over the years, but the speration of the layers is not a good sign. No... probably not as much as it looks, keep in mind there's a real good chance CD was working on his reply before you posted your previous reply about having multiple redundant backups. It's just a time-lag/post overlap issue. Drives I've had go bad often weren't spinning any more, and could not be encouraged to do so. And by not being recognized, most of us are saying that the BIOS doesn't even see a drive there, so it's not a case of not recognizing a partition, or showing no data, it's a case that the electronics aren't talking any more, so there's no chance of trying to repartition or format, even if the drive is spinning. You are the only one who has said that. If you NEVER tested, you will NEVER know. I am not going to bow down to claims, I have sold hundreds of hard drives and have dealt with them since they first came out and other than the older 20 meg and 40 megs with spindles sticking, I have not had the volume of problems that a couple of you are claiming you have had. I myself have owned and used dozens of drives and have NEVER had a problem that ws not able to be fixed. I do NOT allow my computer to scan daily for Virus or whatever either, I do it once per week. The charts that were posted stated 2003 and that is only 6 years and show a 5% drop. Will they continue to drop and then dive? who knows? they haven't been around long enough to establish any real track record while on the other hand, Hard drives or rather magnetic media has. I'll stick with my drives and if the cost keeps coming down and capacity keeps going up, I may buy several drives and put all my movies on Hard drives versus DVDs. |

You are mistakenly thinking that the Quality scores were 100, 6 years ago. That is incorrect. They may have been the same, right after burning, as they are now. But, I have very little faith in the validity of quality tests. Obviously, the 0 score was a bad burn, due to poor media, or a burner going bad. -------------------- Life is good!

I myself have owned and used dozens of drives and have NEVER had a problem that ws not able to be fixed. Umm... I believe we're still being civil here? You are right, I am the only one who stated that, but I know several of the other participants here well enough that I felt comfortable including them in my, "most of us," comment. If they feel I was out of line, I'm sure they would/will speak up. As for "volumes of problems", I don't know if I'd call my 2 or 3 bad drives "volumes", but that's subject to individual interpretation. I haven't gone so far as to open a drive and try to make it spin again. If it won't start up with some gentle (or not quite so gentle) jarring I figure I'm probably done with it. And I don't usually try to swap the electronics to make it recognize the drive either. I have had a drive where the OS would not recognize the partition or any data, and it could indeed be "brought back" by repartitioning and reformatting. But some have truly died a hardware death, and I congratulate you on having never had one go bad on you. I'm familiar enough with drives, electronics and software to know when a drive can and can't be recovered without what I consider exceptional means. I don't think I'm trying to get you to "bow down", I was just discussing different methods and means of handling backups and different levels of redundancy. If it came across that way, I apologize. -------------------- Dave D-W

Grandpa
You are right, I assumed. He said 99 was for TY from 99 and his 2003 copy STILL showed a 94. I never used Nero, so I assumed it was 100 after the burn. My error. Regardless, 6 years doesn't say much......yet. Dewey, Yes! we are still being Civil, I took Debate and Rhetoric Logic in College and certain words in claims stand out. I out of habit like to challenge and if I get a good enough answer, you might even see me use it as a reference. Enviroment has alot to do with electronics and the mechanical parts. I have gone to people's homes to troubleshoot and I have taken more dog and cat hair out of the cooling fan grilles, I am surprised they didn't fry their systems, some did. Thanks for the debate, I enjoyed it and am still solid on magnetic media. |

I actually had second thoughts about my original use of it but went with it anyway. -------------------- Dave D-W
