I don't think this is a big problem. Data Discs being misidentified as Audio CDs is not unheard of… Sometimes a reboot will clear it up other times a firmware update for the drive is in order.
Do you have another PC you can try the discs on?
Since he doesn't have the original files, this could be a big problem.
There is only a single bit on the disc that determines if it is an Audio CD or a Data CD. If that bit isn't being read correctly, or was written incorrectly, then you may have a difficult time. You may need one of the data recovery products often listed here,
ISO Buster,
CD Roller, or
CD/DVD Diagnostics.
