greetings
i've got several macs running 10.3.9 in my studio with toast 6 that are having the issue of being able to burn cd's but not dvds. when attempts are made at dvds "ERROR CODE -50, can't complete because of mac OS error" is the message. burner is factory SONY DVD-RW DW-U21A.
trashing the prefs worked once but since then hasnt worked again. i'm at a loss...
any thoughts?
cheers

Are these data DVDs or video DVDs? What brand and type of media are you using? You might check if Sony has a firmware update for that drive, but it will require connecting it to a PC to flash new firmware.

Also, what version of Toast 6 and QuickTime?

Similar problem: Mac 10.3.9, Toast 6.0

On video DVDs (Final Cut Pro, Quicktime files), it locks-up at end when writing lead out. I have to force quit to abort. The DVD turns out fine, but why should I have to force quit and restart every time?

It used to work just fine. I did not change any settings or brand of DVDs.

have tried many brands of dvds without success. i will try to burn data, copy and burn images and it wont go. same mac os error. i have searched based on the name of dvd burner but no firmware updates that i could find. there is some places online that say this could actually really be another make of burner in these models and might differ from documented. i havent had time to check lately.

i have 3 other machines in the office here doing this. they are all updated to 10.3.9 running toast 6.0.3 and quicktime 7.1.2

if i need to flash drive how is that done?
cheers

Update to Toast 6.1.1
Does all 3 Macs have the same burner? Did you test burning with different brands of media?

checked all drives -they are the smae serial #/make in each machine. updated all macs to toast 6.1.1, but there is no difference. same MAC OS ERROR when burning DVDs.

i too have the same problem, it was a problem with all memorex brand dvd-r's
went to pick up some sony dvd-r's to try and now i just get this disc failed to be written.

dual g5 2.5ghz
2 gigs ram
mac os 10.4.8
sony dvd rw dw-u21a
toast 6.1.1

read some stuff about firmware update but downloaded the update and said i did not need it.

the burner worked fine with ridata dvd-r's but not the manufacturers dvd-r's?

seems like a problem with the writer.

Don't know whether your still having this problem or not but I just put a Sony DVD RW DW U-21A burner in my old G3 Blue and White 400mz and can't burn a dvd at all keep getting -50 errors or disc cannot be burned message. Except in the case of I have some Fuji 2X dvd-rws if I use disc utility and erase then I can use toast or popcorn either one and the disc burns great. Anybody have any ideas how to get this thing to burn other dvds. Or how to cure the problem.

A firmware update probably will help this. However, I think that Sony's firmware updates can only be flashed when the drive is connected to a PC. I also suggest reading user comments on this (and maybe other Sony drives) in the Drive Compatibility Database at www.xlr8yourmac.com. There often are some really good tips there.

When searching for firmware updates there are none available for this drive. I seems like there are a lot of problems with these drives. I guess sony drives are not very good they don't even give any support for their drives.
