Full Version: Confused about Back-Up

I recently purchased a new Seagate external hard drive and decided to use Roxio’s BackUp My PC program to, well, to back up my pc.

I tried to do a full back-up of my C drive and used the title “FirstBackUp093006” to coincide with the date. When the back-up was completed (after about 12 hours), I went to Windows Explorer on my J drive (where the new hard drive is located) and found 14 icons ( FirstBU093006 through FirstBU093006 00014). If I double-click on any of these icons, I then get taken to the opening screen of BackUpMyPc.

I assume the files have been backed up on the external hard drive since the amount of memory added up among the 14 icons appears to approximate the total amount of the folders, files, etc. I tried to back up.

I apologize if I’m making this confusing, but can you help me out here? This is the third Roxio product I’ve had and have been happy with all until now.

Backup My PC backs up your files into an archived file. You need to use Backup My PC to restore all or part of these files.

Should it have broken it down into 14 different groupings?

That will depend on how much data is being backed up, and what file system you're using. If your external drive was formatted using FAT32, then the largest file that can be stored is 4GB. If you had 56GB of data, that would equate to about 14 different files. (Depending on compression and all that...) If the external drive was formatted as NTFS, I would have expected one large file.

So, what file system(s) are you using, and how much data are we talking about? Also, what size are the 14 different files?

First off, thanks so much for your help. The first 13 files contain 4,194,299 KB of data and file #00014 contains 510,052 KB. And yes... we're talking about just under 60GB of data. I gather from your explanation that the drive must have been formatted using FAT32. I wish I knew better about these things; I just took the external hard drive out of the box, plugged it in and got started.

Should I assume that if I want to continue backing up data to this "file", all I do is open the job again and check "incremental" back-up?

I really haven't played with BUMP (BackUp My PC) too much, but I know you need to rename your incremental backup, or else it will overwrite your existing full backup. (Pretty counter-intuitive.)

Assuming you're running Windows XP or 2000, you can convert your external drives file system to NTFS using a Windows utility to do that. If you go into Windows help and look in the Index tab under NTFS, there's a selection for "Converting to NTFS from the Command prompt". Make sure you backup anything valuable on the drive first, just in case. (Always a good idea when playing with the file system.)

Well, it happened. Fortunately, I've been backing up with a full back up onto my external hard drive and now need to un-install Windows XP and do a restore to my computer. I'm not sure how to do this. Do I first re-instally Windows and then install my Roxio Easy CD/DVD Creator 8.0 and THEN open BackUp MY PC and restore? Do I first install my other programs before doing the restore?

It's confusing and if someone can help me, I'll be much obliged.

In this case, you need to install windows, install BUMP, and then restore.

Thanks for your reply. For some reason, after reinstalling Windows XP and installing Back Up My PC, I'm having a problem restoring from an external hard drive. Would you know of anyone who would be able to walk me through this by providing a phone number I can call? If no one feels comfortable doing this, would you know of a phone number I can call to pay for this technical support?

The only support by phone would be the Roxio support number.
What kind of problem are you having?
