A general rule of thumb is to make 100% certain that the actual encoding gets as much of the CPU time as possible.

Notorious for causing problems with both audio and video are all the malware apps running wild out there. Most of use will use adaware SE and spybot s&d (both free to download) to clean out that rubbish.

Also, close down any non-essential services and defrag the drive - that can also make a difference

thanks for the reply - i run spybot s&d regularly and my antivirus is all up to date - i did have everything else closed while doing this and i've also tried the same process on 3 different pc's with the same result - tried performing the burn at different speeds as well...frustration is definitely setting in - it's a company project that needs to be ready on monday

i'm thinking that there may be a setting in the cd-extra preferences that i'm missing?

Can you define the distortion a bit better? Does it sound like it's too loud and your getting clipping? Or is it something else? What is the source of your audio, .MP3 files? .WMA files? .WAV files? If you're using .MP3 or .WMA files, try converting them to .WAV files first, and then use the .WAV files as the source.
