When I install EMC 7.5 it will not recognize my DVD Drive. In device Manager both my DVD writer and DVD reader have a yellow question mark. If I diable them and reboot the yellow question marks are still there. When I uninstall EMC both my DVD drives are normal again in Device Manager.

If that don't work try this.
In device manager right click each drive uninstall both, reboot and then look for the yellow question mark. If they are still there see below.
If that don't work try this. Read it carefully and follow the instructions! You might not have the error codes but you do have >In device Manager both my DVD writer and DVD reader have a yellow question mark.<

By both suggestions I meant both of mlpasley and cdanteek. Have done both and cdanteek's suggestion which has to do with the UpperFilters and LowerFilters registry values did not solve my problem. Without EMC 7.5 installed my DVD drives work fine. However when I install EMC7.5 both my DVD drives are not recongized by Windows XP or EMC 7.5. I have yellow marks by my DVD drives in Device Manager.
Emmmm..... we forgot to ask. Do you have any other DVD burning software on your computer?
If you have another DVD burning software package that contains packet writing software like Drag to Disk, that can cause a conflict.
You might also try disabling Drag to Disk under Windows Start\ Run and type msconfig. Go to the startup tab and UNCHECK DrgToDsk. It caused major problems on one of my computers.

Ditto. MS Knowledge Base article 314060 to delete upper and lower values resolves errors in Device Manager, and drive is displayed in My Computer, but Roxio still does not recognize it. Repair or reinstall of EMC7 recreates device errors. Any solutions, or do I need to look at Nero?

In my case, my setup had been working for some time and then the drives disappeared all of a sudden. I can get them to re-appear by deleting the upper and lower filters, then deleted drives and re-scanning but Roxio cannot see them after that. When I uninstall 7.5 and the re-install, they disappear again (not visible to windows or Roxio). I see Windows error 37 in Device Manager.
I have also uninstalled Media Player, older RecordNow, and Internet Explorer 7.0. I also disabled my firewall and anti-virus during several lengthy re-installs.
EMC 7.5 adds drvmcdb Cdr4_xp in lower filter and Cdralw2k pwd_2k to upper filter during the install so these are the key plus creates a .bak upper and lowerfilter entry in the registry.
Anyone else have other ideas?

Locate the IDE controller the drive- drives are on in device manager, under IDE ATA/ ATAPI controllers. Usually the secondary IDE channel, left click to highlight it then right click uninstall it. Close everything out and reboot the pc, now see if the drives are seen.

OK. I will try that but I think the problem is more fundemental.
EMC 7.5 installs:
cdr4_xp v7.5.047 dated 3/8/05 9:05pm
drvmcdb v7.5.047 dated 1/27/05 3:22am
cdralw2k v3.22.7.0 dated 3/8/05 9:08am
pwd_2k v7.5.047 dated 3/8/05 8:38pm
I went back and looked at a backup from last year when things were fine. Interesting, the drivers have the same date codes but all drivers had a time stamp 1 hr earlier. For ex. cd4_xp was time stamped 8:05pm instead of 9:05pm.
What do others have in a working and non-working environment. I can repeatedly delete the registry entries, delete the drives, and then re-add so windows sees them. The problem then is EMC cannot see them after I install EMC.
I suspect there is a driver error so I will probably back level these to last year as an experiment. As another experiment, I will get the drives back with EMC installed and then run the fix at the top of the forum so this runs against a clean registry (no upper and lower filter) to see if it adds correctly working drivers.

I just installed BackupMyPC ONLY and it works. I did a look at the "older" files and did a restore to a separate location. They seem to be identical. The cd4_xp,drvmcdp,cdralw2k,pwd_2k are in the registry but not showing active when I check drivers used by by drives.
I guess now it is time to do an install with full package to see if it continues to work. The problem is that it is a 1GB file package and takes forever to install or uninstall.

No joy. I installed emc 7.5 (software downloaded version as purchased and there is no upgrade) and I lost the drives again.
This clearly means the EMC is the center of the problem since BackupMyPC worked.
I wonder how I do a very clean install. I see mentioned in the 8.0 about a installer cleaner. Does that work on7.x?

I finally got it working but I am not sure what I did the final did the trick. I did make sure the registry key "current control set" was deleted. I also completely got rid of my divx codecs from divx. I had already dumped IE and MediaPlayer (but V10 still seems to be installed but not shown checked as installed).
For added measure, I went through Zone Labs and deleted anything related to roxio just in case something got accidentally blocked.
What is missing is some step by step debug process to isolate the sw conflict that causes this....

I'm having a similar problem to what I see other people are. I want to figure out why it is happening. I installed EMC 7.5 before and I did not have any of these problems.
I reinstalled my OS, but included SP2 before I installed EMC 7.5 which I think has something to do with it.
I do not have the My Computer Device issues reported, but EMC 7.5 will not recognize my drives. It does see them in Tools Dic Utilities, but it tells me my Blank Media is not recordable which I know it is.
BTW - I have no other DVD software installed besides what ever might have been included in XP SP2.
If we can figure out why this happens... I refuse to buy EMC 9 just to fix this I already paid 100 buck for 7.5 just a year or so ago and it was working fine for what I needed.
I tried that engine link, and no it did not work.
I think it happens some time after SP 2 was installed.
Having the new ms media player etc... and I think I did install divx before I installed roxio. This is lame that software cannot co-exist, I mean virus protection software I can understand. But why does DVD burning software have to have a foot hold on a system.
All I really want is to Copy data to dis, make disc images...
wait I have a program called drive clone... for back up and restore... could that be it? We will see...

Couple of things jump out there
1: WMP11 will break EMC 7 (and also 8)
2: If drive Clone is packet writing software, it will clash with D2D
Solution - remove both and also Internet Explorer 7 if that is installed
Mr. Anderson
Jan 20 2007, 09:43 AM
Hmm
- Removal of Drive Clone did not work
- I will now try uninstall EI7
- after that I will remove media player 11 (I think that s what I have).
The question is, if this works, is roxio going to give us a patch, or just say upgrade. I feel like I just bought this software (more or less a year ago) and I have to put out another 60+ I'm not sure I like this setup.
[I will post my result in an edit if no one responds before I get back other wise in a later post]
Will version 9 not have these problems, or will I end up back where I started again.

Patch - I don't think so (MS put those two programs out without regard for what they would do to existing software) and they do wreck other programs beside Roxio.
EMC9 - jury's still out on that (there have been some reports of problems, while other people have it working)
Personally, I refused to install IE7 - I use Firefox as my main browser and IE6 is ONLY used for MS Updates
If I understand the problem, you had EMC 7 installed and it worked properly. Then you reinstalled WinXP and EMC 7 won't recognize your DVD/CD burner.
Is that correct?
Have you gone to the website of the computer/dvd burner manufacturer's website and downloaded/installed the correct 'drivers' for that drive? WinXP does have built in 'drivers' that will be installed by default for DVD/CD drives, but that doesn't mean that your drive will work properly.
Also, go to the Roxio/ Software Updates page and see if there are any updates for the software. The automatic update feature in your software doesn't work anymore, so you have to do it manually.
Let us know what you find, please.

Well I did not start this Thread, but I figured I'd join it since I was having similar problems. And many heads are better than one...
I now have EMC 7.5 working. BTW, I built this system and the XP drivers work fine. I don't install factory drivers unless I notice very bad performance in hardware. Besides all my parts are OEM, and I'm not letting that be an excuse for such problems with software. Things have just become more complicated, and I want simple. Roxio delived on the simple user experience, but I guess we pay the price in the background where the source code runs...
I reinstalled my entire OS from scratch again. This is another case of how order of installation can be problematic. This time, I installed EMC 7.5 before I installed most of my updates. I believe that SP2 is a problem if you install EMC after it is on the system and possibly after some updates before sp2 as well might casue that missing drives issue.
The problems seem to be in two ways.
1) Your actual Optical Disc Drives are not recognized by the OS (which I'm fortunate to have not experienced.)
2) EMC will not be able to see your Optical drives when you try to burn. They just are not in the list.
I can tell you no patch fixed it. And that patch was really meant for external drives, which worked fine for me too with out it when it worked.
RANT...
This sucks because when I get a new system or update windows, it is not going to run unless I installed it before I updated.
All I really wanted was something I could use to make quick data discs and disc copies. All the extra stuff I really could do with out, (especially if it trims the price.) And I'm not happy about having to even consider buying new version of the software becasue it is no longer working with the same OS because if updates.
I would not mind if it was incompatabilities from XP to Vista... I'm just not interested in paying another 70+ bucks. And will this happen to me again, when I have version 9 and version 10 or 11 is out and XP had a few updates that breaks 9? I'm forced now to look else where... Wish me luck becasue I have had bad luck with the competition too. Nero messed up my video settings last time I tried it. Lets see what the smaller companies have.

If you have two packet writing programs on your computer ( Nero has one ), you'll need to uninstall Drag 2 Disk.
Not installing factory drivers is a mistake. There's a reason why they give you drivers for your hardware. The drivers included with XP are 'generic' and most hardware needs the drivers provided by the manufacturer to work properly.
Also, have you visited the website of your CD/DVD burner manufacturer to see if there are any 'updates\ firmware' for that burner?

That's 2 threads that you've jumped in to with a "me too" post and little information other than you're burner model. Best to start a new thread with your problem, and be sure you include the rest of your system specs and the exact version of 7 that you have. The update you tried to install may be for a different v 7 than you have.
