I bought EMC7 over a year ago and could never get the stinking thing to work. It would just randomly disappear off my screen like it was never open.

Since then I have used Adobe Premier Elements and Windows Movie Maker. EMC9 looked like it had some pretty nice new features so I thought I would give it a try again. Stupid me!!! A waste of more money?!? I plug in my DV camcorder (Sony DCR-PC100) via firewire and load Media Import.

I click the Video button and I see information below telling me I'm at the "Video Import" screen. It says "Select a device or source to import from" in the dropdown. I click on it and select "Sony DV Device."

My screen refreshes and I am now back at the "Welcome to Roxio Media Import" screen. Boy!!! This software is really easy to use and has some great improvements. Too bad I wasted more money on it.

To be sure that this didn't cause a problem with my other software I tried Adobe Premier Elements and Windows Movie Maker again. Both saw my camcorder immediately and allowed me to control it.

I see this specific camcorder is not on Roxio's approved hardware list. What a crock!!! I can't imagine them only having a couple specific models on this list. Unbelievable.

I'm using a Compaq Presario R3000 laptop running Win XP if that matters. It shouldn't since my other software works fine. What's up with Roxio... and why can't they seem to get it right!!!

Oh... and one other item of importance to note. I just got a "Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Error" on RoxWatch9.exe. It says "This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information." Any idea what this means?

I sure hope somone can help me. I would love to use this product and recommend it. BUT I find it impossible to do at the moment. Thanks...

Disable Roxwatch via msconfig. It is an uneeded resource hog. Reboot, and see if you still have problems with your video capture.

Make sure that your video card drivers are upgraded to the latest version.

Most camcorders won't be on this list. It's just not possible for any company to test their software with every camcorder on the market.

Try the Microsfot update for firewire
Update for Windows XP (KB885222)

After you install Windows XP Service Pack 2, some 1394 devices (such as digital cameras that use S400 speed) may not perform as expected.
Get it here.

Make sure you have updated video card drivers and the latest DirectX (Oct2006).

I disabled RoxWatch and applied the KB885222 Update. I still have the same problem. I'm not sure if updating my video driver would fix this particular problem as you suggested... but I'm willing to try anything that might get this working. I'm unsure how to do this, however. Device Manager lists my driver as "ATI Mobility Radeon 9000 IGP.", the Driver Date as 11/15/2003 and the Driver Version as 6.14.10.6396. I tried the "Update Driver" button and allowed it to search for a driver but it did not find one. I tried searching the web and ATI for one but did not find an exact match based on the name. Therefore, I don't know which one to download.

I appreciate the initial suggestions. Do you have any more thoughts? Thanks...

I have exactly the same problem with the Sony DCR-PC105. The really stupid thing is it works fine with Roxio EMC 6, 7 and 8 but now not 9! How can they go backwards? I really don't accept that a company charging $100 for video editing software is excused from testing with one of the most popular, if not the most popular, line of cameras. Roxio customer support and software support should start reading this support forum and listening to their customers.

Anyone got any bright ideas? Not even a mention of incompatability with these cameras on Roxio's website. Shocking!

What program are you using to capture with since V9 isn't doing it?

Perhaps you should start a new Topic for this supplying that information as well as your computer specs.

I actually never got mine to work either. EMC7 never worked and I got so frustrated with it I finally gave up. The same happened with EMC9. I have updated all my drivers as suggested but the software still gives me fits. Why should I even have to worry about all this? I didn't have to do anything after installing Windows Movie Maker, Adobe Premier or Premier Elements. They all just worked out of the box. I really had high hopes for Roxio but my confidence level is just destroyed with this product. I have wasted money on two versions of this software and have not been able to use either one of them.

After many hours backing up and reinstalling my PC, I did get the software to work without consuming 100% of CPU but just running the menu. I then had to have my DVD replaced for an unrelated issue, but that took the PC out of action for a few weeks. Now I finally have a PC that has a working version of EMC v9 and a DVD writer that works, I can't get video off my camcorder! Even windows movie maker sees the camcorder and extracts video without losing a frame. Why does Media Import refuse to let the device be selected?

I have a Toshiba Satellite M55-S3293 laptop running XP Home Edition SP2, 1GB RAM, 100GB 5400RPM disk drive, Intel 915 video chipset.

You never did list your system specs, but I think that you would have problems with EMC 9 with your video card. It should have worked with EMC 7 or 7.5, if your drivers were a bit newer than 2003 drivers you mentioned before.
