I recently made several copies of a video/slide show that I created using EMC7 and EMC9. The DVD's play just fine on my comuter, and also on my DVD player/TV setup. However, when I sent the copies to friends and relations, the result was a complete flop. Some of the recipients could not get any results (Would not play), and others had partial results ending in the DVD player stopping, and not responding to any commands.

I then took the master copy over to a neighbors house to see what kind of results we would get using his equipment. At first, the DVD played perfect, but after several minutes the DVD stopped in mid scene, and would not respond to any command except to abort the play by opening the DVD drawer.

I returned to my home and proceeded to play the DVD on the same player where it had always played perfectly. However, this time I experienced some of the same problems that I observed on the neighbor's machine. I ejected the disk and wiped it with a lint free cloth and it started playing again----for a while, then started the stopping, stuttering, etc, then just stopped altogether.


What could cause this strange phenomenon? How can it be fixed? I could understand it playing on my computer, but since my DVD /TV player had nothing to do with producing the video, why is it the only player that will successfully play it??? (or at least it did until playing it in the neighbor's machine.

Probably the media and I am guessing you are using 'plus' media???

If that is the case, try using 'dash' media – DVD-R

There is a way to set 'plus' media to DVD-ROM type but your burner has to support it and it has to be set to do so, before you burn a disc.

I am using HP DVD+R 16x which I bought with my HP dvd 740 burner (lightScribe). I will try your suggestion, Thanks.

I couldn't get HP's site to cough up any info on that drive. You can check the current drive settings with blank media in the drive using the Tools – Disc and Device utility in the Roxio program group.

Under Media it will tell you what the Book Type is set at.

I switched to the DVD-R (Sony) disks, as was suggested, and that helped a little. I still had one small glitch on one panel. I believe it was just an audio skip. However, the same disk played on my neighbors DVD player resulted in several more (6-8?) glitches.

I then burned a copy using the DVD burner integral to my computer. It is a Sony DVDRW DL (I had purchased the HP to use on my last computer). The disk recorded on the Sony produced the same audio glitch at exactly the same frame as the HP burner, so I am now suspect of the EMC9.

On another note, I realize that I am just a rookey at DVD productions, but I find the different features of EMC9 are very cumbersome to use. Case in point: I find it neccessary to start a DVD slide show production by first selecting "Create Slide Show" in the welcome screen. I then have to edit using Video Wave so I can select the transition scheme (page turns) that I prefer. I then have to send the production to "My DVD" so I can make use of that nifty little menu panel. If I try to begin the production in "My DVD", there is no way to select page turn transitions (that I am aware of). Also, while in Video Wave, If I make a goof, I can't see anyway to back up and correct the problem, so I end up starting all over again GEESH!

I tried using Cine-Magic, but it was even more restrictive than My DVD.

I don't mean to sound like sour grapes here, but I am a bit frustrated to say the least. Thank you for your continued patience, and hopefully some more good advice---I need it.

Thanks James, but I guess I am not following you. I went to the Roxio Creator9 home screen. I then scrolled down the left side and selected "Tools". I could only see info about how much space was available on the blank disk, and similar info. I did not see anything about "Book Type". Obviously I must be looking in the wrong place. I did find out that the Sony DVD burner (integral to my computer) is model DW - Q120A, with firmware rev PYS3. See also my earlier reply .

I rarely use the Home program, I was talking about going through Start – All Programs, Roxio group – Tools – Disc and Device Utility. It is a different program…

But something else caught my eye in your recent posts. The problems followed your project regardless of media.

I suggest using RW media to play with and try a new project starting in VideoWave. Launch it directly and not from Home. Make one project simple, slides and sound, and burn it.

Then try another adding the transitions and the other features that you used with the original project.

See how that works out.

Might be well to check for updates for your video and sound card too.

Using DVD-R disks rather than DVD+R seems to solve the problem of not being able to run the production on other DVD to TV players, for the most part. However, the results seem to be just barely useable. By that I mean the finished slide show seems to be a little jittery on the screen. As each new frame opens, the image takes a slight jerk up and to the left, before settling down.

In comparison. the slide show produced using EMC7 was rock solid, and appeared to be just a little sharper image as well.

I just noticed that you suggest using RW Media. I assume that is - RW, not +RW? I will certainly give that a try.

As far as the Video and sound cards go, my computer is less than a month old. It would seem to me that the cards should be the latest, or is that being naive ?

Try burning your production at a slower speed. If you can, burn one at 4x, and see if it makes a difference.

Maybe just a 'little' naive.... less expensive models are priced accordingly. Even some of the mid-range and higher end may still have less capable video cards. The first thing I did when I purchased my Media Center in June was to replace the video card.

This has been reported several times. if I remember correctly , V8 had the same problem so it hasn't been fixed. Sometimes updating the video card driver helps, but usually, switching to software mode gets rid of this. However, the 3D transitions/effects will not be available if you force Videowave or MyDVD to software render.
