Hmmm... Roxio got squirrly and would work sometimes and at others would lock up or crash...

Tried to uninstall, but couldn't with uninstaller... Missing some dll file, apparently.

Tried manual uninstall; now my Original EMC 7 installation disc says "Can't find certificate".

Running XP and Firefox.

Have my CD KEY# and TSID# if that's of any use.

Hate to chuck it and move on since it has worked so well for me for years. Is 7 no longer compatible w/XP?? Seemed to do just fine for quite a while. Could I somehow be victim of the umpti-billionth Microsoft Upgrade?

Any clues??

This could be your problem.................uninstall Internet Explorer 7 (revert back to IE 6).
grandpabruce
If you do have IE7 on your computer, and you still have problems when you roll back to IE6, try using the Microsoft Cleanup Utility to get rid of all Roxio and Sonic files on your computer, reboot, then try to reinstall.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...kb;en-us;290301

You should also install the latest Microsoft Installer. Actually, install this before you try installing the program again.

I use Roxio Easy Media Creator 7...Been on the system since day one from DELL. Now three years old...

I'm having the exact same issue here. Been working on it with Dell all weekend, but no luck. We've tried system restore, he played with the upper and lower filters. Uninstalled and reinstalled countless times. This morning I did a system restore back to a day I hadn't yet used, and at least now Roxio will see the drive and the CD opens. Problem now is the Drag to Disk is inop...Something about a certificate missing which is needed to make it work.

Is there a link for a patch which will fix this? Dell suggested that I re-install Windows but I hate to go that deep...What a mess!

Thanks,

There is no "patch" that I am aware of.

Have you tried all the suggestions in post #3.
R Bell
It was working fine up until Dell tried to resolve an issue with my other drive the DVD/CD-ROM drive on Saturday...I spent 12 hours with Dell techs on Sat and Sunday...As it stands now the original issue with the D: drive is still there, and my Roxio software now sees the drive, but the Drag to Drop will not work. When I try to drop a file in there I get that Certificate error message.

Dell also messed around in the Registry with those filter files 2 or 3 times. At this point I'm thinking of doing a "Restoring of the Dell Defaults" which is supposed to restore the system like it was from the factory.

Don't know what else to do besides reinstalling Win XP

Rather than reinstalling WinXP, I'd suggest a different approach.

Don't use Drag to Disk. Many people have lost their data by using that program because it is packet writing software. It's a good program for moving files between computers, but shouldn't be used for long term storage.

Use Creator Classic to write those files. It may take a few seconds more, but your data will be more secure.

You can also try a Windows\ Add Remove programs \ Roxio\ Change\ REPAIR.

Didn't mean to throw in a curve there, but I was hoping to stay within the Subject matter, and hopefully we can both find resolutions. I have the same error message except just with Drag to Disk. Funny I've never had the problem after three years of service, now..Bang...

Another thing that's bad is the Technicians are chasing their tails. One says it's a windows issue, and others say it is a Roxio Software problem. So which way do ya go? They have attacked the issue from different angles, and dug the hole deeper!

At the risk of being jumped on for being repetitious, what Version of Internet Explorer do you have? (Help > About) If you don't have Internet Explorer, what browser are you using, and what Version is it?

Unless and until you can answer that, I don't think this thread is going anywhere.

You may not think this is going anywhere, but I respectfully disagree.

R Bell,

WindowsXP is 'strange' when it comes to handling registry entries and CD/DVD drives. So my guess would be that the technician that told you it's a Windows problem is correct.

How and what order software that writes to DVD drives on your computer is installed can cause problems. Unfortunately, as you've learned, solving the problems are not easy.

So your best bet is to try grandpabruce's suggestions in post # 3. They were to uninstall Internet Explorer 7 (if you have it), uninstall EMC 7, use the Windows Uninstaller utility, and reinstall the program......

Also make certain that you don't have any other 'packet writing' software installed that will conflict with Drag to Disk (Sonic DLA, etc.).

My suggestion is not to use Drag to Disk. I have it disabled under Start\ Run\ type msconfig\ OK\ go to the startup tab and Uncheck Drg2Dsk\ Apply\ Ok. When the computer restarts, you'll get a system config change message and just check the box to not show the message again.
R Bell
Good answers here, but let me answer the other person by saying that I have been using IE7 since day one, with no problems with my Roxio Software.

So I think it is safe to say that is not the problem. Unless....unless, somewhere along the line with all the windows updates, that we all get microsoft threw something in those updates to to mess up the works...A bad file or something which tanged up the registry. Tough to say...The Roxio I use came with the Dell computer software package, and this is the first time I've had this problem since getting it back in 2004.

When Dell fiddled with my registry yesterday, I noticed after that the Roxio drag to disk Icon at the bottom said, "NO RECORDER" This told me it was not reading the drive, nor was were my disk opening.

I deleted Roxio this morning, and the folder in the Registry, then did a system restore. It see the disk now, and will open them, but the drag to disk won't work. When I drag a file there to burn I get the Certificate missing error message.

So where I get that, I don't know?? I've looked all over the Roxio support site, all they have is uninstall tool for a different problem...

Mr Bell, since your a fellow veteran and I see we have visited the same countries, I'm going to try and sugar coat this. Four people above have told you IE 7 will break EMC 7 installation! It seems you were lucky for awhile and things worked. Now they won't, follow GPB advice above if you want it fixed.
If after IE 7 is removed and you still have problems please return and post for more help.

So what your saying is, dump the IE7...I still have the problem, and you eat crow...Is this correct?? If it did fix it I gladly would stuff myself on it.

I think now that Dell had their fingers in the pie, it's deeper than that. I'll get the frag orders next...I just talked to a Dell supervisor, and he assures me he will fix it. I'll give him a chance tonight when I get home...

Your right we do share a common heritage, except atitude...

Thanks, GI

I think you're right that the problem is deeper.

However, fixing things is a process of elimination and you did ask for our advice.

So since we've seen lots of people fix strange problems with EMC 7 by uninstalling Internet Explorer 7, that's a good place to start.

If it doesn't work, what have you lost by trying? You can always reinstall it again.

Digging into your registry is something you need to do with the Dell Technicians. It's beyond the scope of this forum...... especially since they helped you into this problem.

Matter of fact I do and did heed all of your advice. Guess I should have explained my situation better.

I'd been at this process of eliminating things since saturday morning. Along with 5 different Dell Techs.

Anyway, I did, last night uninstall IE 7 and went back to IE 6...But had the same problem, no effect on the Roxio Software. I get the same error message, " Certificate missing, or corrupt. Re-install"

I do appreciate all your input..! Dell, is sending me 2 new drives. He seems to think that will fix it, But I still have my doubts. I'm off for Good Friday, I will install them then, and let you know how it came out.

Meanwhile if anyone knows anything about these Certificates. please let me know how and where these are located. I haven't a clue.

Oh my! If you cannot get the drives to install correctly, throw more drives into the mix. That's an interesting solution.

Now you didn't say..... have you used the Windows Uninstaller Cleanup Utiltiy between installs? http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...kb;en-us;290301 That is supposed to help eliminated incorrect registry entries according to Microsoft.

I'd suggest you........
-uninstall Roxio and
-use the above Windows Uninstaller Cleanup utility,
-restart your computer, then do a
-Windows Disk Cleanup and
-Windows Defragment your hard drive. Then
-restart your computer again and
-disconnect from the internet (this step won't work with programs that require online activation)
-turn off the Firewall, Virus, Pop up blocker programs
-install Roxio.

Now that's a lot of steps and none of the above may make a difference, but it couldn't hurt. That's what I do when I have trouble installing a program.

Error messages frequently do no tell you what is wrong and it might be the combination of the 2 drives or one of them might not be functioning correctly, a virus or firewall program might not be letting part of the program install correctly, or it might be something we haven't thought of yet.

Now if that doesn't work, you might want to uninstall Roxio and do the above steps again, but DO NOT install Roxio before you install those new drives on Friday. That way when you install the program again, you'll be doing a fresh install with Roxio just recognizing the 2 new drives. smile.gif
R Bell
That sounds like a plan ML...Logical that is. Oh another thing that happened while doing my last EMC7 uninstall, and reinstall yesterday was when it was booting up, I got the blue screen of death, as I call it. Crashed. Should have written down all the mumbo jumbo on the screen but I didn't.

I'm almost afraid to do that again. I'm running out of restore dates. Wonder what would cause that? I remember something there about some application not not canceling, before the reboot, and it stopped the boot-up to save damage to my system. I restarted in safe mode, and did a sys restore.

Yea it just gets better... blink.gif Oh I did try something in the device manager which would allow me to "roll back" with my drives, but it didn't work.

I'll just horse around with this stuff and do some reading while I wait for the drives to come in from Dell. Should be here Thursday. I' still under warranty for another year.

Thanks,

RB

Going back to the original thread starter, Improvateur. I was thinking the same thing myself about the MS Upgrades?? They may have threw a monkey wrench in the works.

I'm having Dell send along the newest version of Roxio EMC along with the new drives. I'll be curious if the Certificate Error message goes away. Time for an upgrade anyway since I've been using 7.0 for three years.

Have you since upgraded to the new version? And if so is it working?

I ran into the Certificate file problem a while back and what ended up fixing it for me was uninstalling, registry cleaner and then a complete manual cleaning of the registry. The manual cleaning is what finally did it I think.Do regedit and delete every key you can find for either Roxio or Sonic. This is what finally got it working for me.
R Bell
Thats when my problem went from bad to worse, when Dell went into my registry and started fiddling with the lower filters & upper filters and what have you. Then it mushroomed into my Roxio and the DVD Burner. I was burning good just a day or so before that, so I'm pretty sure the Dell tech messed it up.

That registry idea sounds pretty good! My gut tells me it's something in there...I will try doing what you suggest. I didn't think of deleting the mysonic DVD file from there. I just took out the Roxio folders, then restarted, then I re-installed EMC 7, and thats when I got the BLUE Screen...

With all this 'fiddling' going on, I'd suggest you save your work on an external hard drive or CD/DVDs if either of the burners still work.

You might end up formatting your hard drive and reinstalling everything to get things to work correctly again.

Your right ML...Thats my plan on Friday if the drives don't work. I already have a good Level II Dell tech lined up for that. He just called while ago and said he could send me a free copy of Roxio 5.3, but thats too old, and it's pretty basic. One of the nicest & knowledgable tech I've ran in to for quite some time...

May be a WIN XP Re-install coming...Anyway like everything, this will have a resolution, and I'll pass on what I found when it's over, so maybe the info can help another poor sucker like me with the same problem, hehehe.....I sure would like to find the root cause though.

RB
R Bell
Heres an update on the progress I've made, and how I proceeded...

1) Unplugged and reseated the drive connectors
2) Booted up then deleted all Sonic & Roxio files from Registry and hard drive
3) Did a Registry scan (With Purchased Software) and repaired over 900 errors...! Then Re-booted
4) Disconnected Cable modem, disabled Firewall & Spyware.
5) Purchased Roxio EMC 9 Did an install.
6) Roxio 9 recognized and deleted old burn files from Nero, etc...
7) Installed and rebooted system
8) E: Drive & Roxio started working. No problems what so ever!
***************************

Don't know that this info will help anyone, but it helped me get rid of that "Certificate Error"

Still have the original issue with the DVD-ROM 616E, But I feel the new drive will resolve this...

My guess is that it was the registry work that fixed it.Somewhere (not sure where) there's a registry key about the Certificates that was either messed up or for some reason missing.
When I had the problem I used 3 different registry cleaners and still it only worked after a manual cleaning.
Glad you got it working and hopefully the new drive fixes your problems totally. If not come back and let us know.

I took a brief look at the registry yesterday in the Roxio folder before doing the registry fixer, at the Certificate folder. Two of the entries in there said, default, can't remember the other one. There were only three files in there. I'm very happy about it too! Nice to have progress for a change. I was a step away from having to re-install WIN XP, as per Dell... biggrin.gif

I agree with Terry. It was probably the registry cleaner which is where you suspected the problem was all along.

What register cleaning program did you use? It would be nice to know which one works.

I'm also glad to hear you upgraded to EMC 9 since you wanted it to work with Internet Explorer 7.
