Hello. I was wondering about the different types of video formats I end up with. You have MPEG2 layer I, MPEG 1 layer II, MPEG 1 layer III. I was using Hauppauge WinTV USB2 with Win2000 and Roxio Video capture. According to Roxio 9 video capture, I should have been downloading a MPEG-2 file but it created MPEG 1 layer II. Tech support at Hauppauge said that MPEG is a function of the software and not the hardware. Win2000 does not let me create MPEG-2. I was curious as to why it didn't create the MPEG2 file from Roxio 9? I tried using different settings, DVD HQ, DVD SP. Although, I wonder if I'm better off to just create AVI DV files to start capturing home movies?
OK - mpeg 1 layer III is better known as mp3 but these are the FULL titles of the codec (and a bit too unwieldy for general use.

How are you verifying that they are MPEG 1?
If you truly can't capture MPEG 2 using the Win2000 software that hauppaugge provides, then the only reasons I can think of is you need to update the drivers and apps from their site as yours are outdated or corrupt, or you have it connected to a USB 1 port rather than a USB 2 port.

I thought Hauppauge by default captured to mpeg-2. Using my 500 card and Roxio EMC9, I had no problems with getting mpeg-2 captures at many different bitrates.
I would suggest that if you're going to be doing any editing, that you capture your movies to AVI as I find Videowave much quicker wtih those than mpeg.

By Properties ID tag. Unless, there is another way to check it? According to the Hauppauge tech support WinTV USB2, using WinTV2000 can only do MPEG1 which seems to be case when I look under options. But I was just wondering why Roxio 9, even though it is able to do MPEG2, that it does not show under properties MPEG2. But I will do AVI, though it create large files, are easier to work with.

It's possible that EMC is taking its info from the Hauppage capture device and that's why mpeg2 isn't an option (if it can't be captured, there's no point in making it an option)

The properties ID tag using Windows Explorer or from within a program?
That makes no sense to me why they would tell you that. If the Video choice is one of the DVD ones the Video is set as "DVD" which means it will record an Mpeg-2 video file. The Audio portion is Mpeg-1 Layer 2 typically, so maybe that is what they were refering to.
All video files I record from my USB 2 one (listed in my sig) whether with Win2000 or another app (GP-PVR) create mpeg-2 video files.

I am just using properties from Windows. But it does look like it is referring to the audio file, as it lists such things as birate. The extension does say (.mpg). I did install this program called dbpower amp. So I don't know if that is creating the confusion.

Try Gspot and see what it tells you. Pretty nice freebie to have around.
