Up until today we've been able to make DVD copies using Roxio 2.
But today when we inserted a DVD to copy we keep getting an error message

Could not record the disc because of a Mac OS error
Result code=-50"

Can anyone tell us what might be the problem?

I've received the same error Mac OS = 50 within the last week. Have you had any responses regarding a cause, fix, or update?

No. I posted my problem 9 days ago and haven't gotten any responses at all.

I notice "John at Roxio" hasn't posted anything for about a month so it looks like this Roxio isn't actively monitoring this site.

I'm considering finding another program to copy DVD's and would appreciate any suggestions from anyone out there. I use Macs mostly

Can't say that I can help with this, but if you'd describe the details I might be able to do some testing of my own. Which settings were you using in Popcorn? What is the source you are copying from - a VIDEO_TS, disc image or DVD? Did you try Save as Disc Image and then burn that using the Image File setting? What media are you using? Is this an Apple SuperDrive, and external drive or something else? You say it worked until receintly. Was anything installed or updated on your Mac in the interim? At what point in the process do you receive the -50 error?

I'm having the same problem. It just started happening about a month ago. I have tried many different things, i.e. saving as disc image, changing every setting that I can find, and what not. I have come to a conclusion: Popcorn 2 will no longer compress or convert any thing. I have found that if I rip the DVD's main feature, and as long as the main feature does not need to be compressed (is less than 4.7 GB) then popcorn will go ahead and burn the disc. However, it still will not convert the file to ipod; no matter how small the file is. I would really like to know what is going on with this application. The only thing that I can think of is that maybe Popcorn doesn't work with the latest update for OS X??? I don't really know why else it would all of a sudden stop working and start giving a mac OS error code???

P.S. The video_TS folder is not damaged in any way.

Try trashing the Popcorn plist file in your User>Library>Preferences folder or even reinstall Popcorn. I'm presuming you are using Popcorn 2.0.1. What you describe shouldn't be a problem. It works with my G4 iBook and G5 iMac on OS 10.4.9. I only do a full disc extraction when testing Popcorn with ripped DVDs.

I've trashed the popcorn plist file and reinstalled Popcorn twice. Both times I tried to burn without the update, and then with the update, all to no avail. In the past I always did full disc extractions; I only started main features when I found out that Popcorn would no longer compress.

It sounds like you've done all the troubleshooting I can think of. Popcorn 2 does work with OS 10.4.9 on my Macs (a G4 and G5). You might try creating a new user account and run Popcorn from it (you'll need to put the VIDEO_TS folder in the Shared folder in the root>Users folder to access it from a different user account).

My guess is there is a glitch in your Mac's OS that is preventing Popcorn from working properly. One thing to try is downloading and applying the OS 10.4.9 combined system updater because that fixes odd issues that sometimes occur during incremental system updates.

Have you tested with a VIDEO_TS that you know worked previously with Popcorn?

So I figured out the problem. It is the Video_TS folder. The newer dvd's have a new copy protection encryption on them, which MTR 2 will not decode. Older dvd's still work fine, it's just the new ones that will not work. So I will have to say that the problem is not with Popcorn 2, the app. works just fine. You just need to find a ripper that will handle the new encryption, i.e. MTR 3... Thanks for the advice.

Can anyone tell me what is a good ripper that I can use that will rip the new cd's. I just bought me a new mac and it's my first mac so Im tring to figure this out.

Roxio doesn't allow discussion of ripping commercial discs in its forums. As I recall there was a site titled ripdifferent.com where this is discussed.

Which settings are you using?

In any case one thing you can try that might eliminate the error is to choose Save as Disc Image from the File menu instead of clicking the burn button. Then burn the resulting disc image using the Image File setting in the Copy window.

tsantee, tried doing what you suggested. Still got the same error. Usually around 49% done.

I am using a Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-109 set at Best.

Advanced settings:
DAO, Enable Buffer Underrun Prevention
Verify Data, Catalog Disc Conents
Remind me to label disc
Eject disc . . . yes
Display recording settings before writing

Firmware: 1.58
Cache size 2MB

Yep!...I got the same problem...
Have sucessfully burned DATA DVD+R discs on a Dual 2.5Ghz Powermac using Toast.

Using popcorn, I have a video TS folder generated from DVD Studio Pro, with noncommercial
video from Final Cut Pro.

I've done this process many times and am getting the same thing.

Connection not stable...error -50
followed by illegal media message.

Have you tried using a different brand of media and/or checking to see if a firmware update is available for your drive?

Thanks a million! I have had bother with Popcorn 2.0.1 since it came out. I am running system 10.4.10 on an intel g5 imac and binned the prefs... hey presto... the bloodey thing worked! Good thinking!
