I'm attempting to record an audio stream. I've set everything up right and tested... it works. Ive recorded and played back a number of things.

I run into trouble when start to record a stream (a 3 hour concert), leave and come back, hit the stop...and go to play it (the file/entry), and there's no audio.

The meter's still rolling when I return to the computer, so I hit the Stop...and the recorded file shows. So I go to play the file... and there's nothing there. I go to edit audio... and there's nothing there?

All the settings, levels etc were set and visually working, so I don't know why the file is blank???

Is it sometimes 6 plus hours before returning to hit the stop button...which really should'nt matter, should it?

Anyways, any suggestions would be appreciated.

As long as when you hit stop the timer is still going and the meters are moving indicating something is being recorded then you should have sound.
What is the size of the files that have no sound?If you try and play them with something like Windows Media Player do they show a time and actually try and play but with silence?

Yep, the timer's still going when I hit stop. The stream however has finished, sometime hours earlier.

This morning when I tried again, I kept an eye on the meters before leaving for work, and they were definitly recording. I got home, hit STOP, and the file displayed... but nothing was in it.

I sat by the computer as the stream was finishing to hit the STOP.... everything worked just fine. I'll be recording another stream tonight while asleep hitting the stop when I awake. I'll see what happens...

There is a limit to the size a .WAV file can be. In the header is a 32 bit signed integer that limits the file size to about 202 minutes (3 hours 22 minutes), or 2 GB. (Assuming 44.1 Ksps sampling rate, stereo, 16 bit samples.) I suspect that may be what you're seeing. If you go beyond that, the results are unpredictable... or, as you're seeing, unplayable.

If you changed the sampling rate to 22.05Ksps, you'd double the amount of time you could record. Depending on the source of your stream, that may not significantly affect the quality of your final recording.

If that's what you're hitting, you may want to use a different utility to record with that automatically stops after a certain amount of time. CDWAVE is one such program that offers that option. It may also be an option in the part of EMC you're currently using, so check there too. (By the way, what are you using? Sound Editor?)
