Try the MS Installer Cleanup Utility,
here.
FYI, the Adaptec Reader was most likely installed, by you, from an old DirectCD disc. It is an automatic thing on all of the DCD discs. If it doesn't see a Reader it offers to install. Users think it is required so they click OK. Problem is that the detection program doesn't know XP has a built in reader. – If in doubt about any install, don't! Try it first and see what happens.
The MS Installer Cleanup utility just takes out orphaned install information. It will not / does not uninstall anything or remove additional files and driver entries.

barryware,
Thanks very much for your reply!
I tried Safe mode, but the result was unfortunately the same:
"Adaptec UDF Reader Uninstaller.
An error occurred while uninstalling UDF Reader.
An attempt to delete one or more files has failed.
The error code is 0x00000002."

I have a rig at work which still has the old adaptec stuff on it. I'll take a look and post the files to delete as well as the reg entries to delete... However, I won't be back in the office till Thursday. If it is not posted in a day or so... Remind me.
Or... If you do not want to wait... Search you HD for UDF*.sys. Delete the files that the search finds. Make sure you leave them in the recycle bin. If memory serves, there should be two files and I believe they will be in the windows\system32 folder.
Reboot your computer... You will get an error on reboot or for sure, there will be a red X entry in the application and/or system log.
Search for the error in the registry and delete the subkey..
I am going by memory but you will see something like:
Unable to load / find UDFbla bla bla.sys. Search the reg for UDF Bla Bla Bla.sys and delete the subkey.
That should do it.... Before you delete anything from the reg... Back it up! Export it from the reg editor (regedit.exe)
