Using Media Creator 9 I have compiled and burnt a DVD using 3 movie clips: 2 mpg files and one AVI file.

When the DVD is played, in some cases it has no audio, whereas in other cases it does:

* Plays OK: On a cheap old TV set-top DVD player
* Plays OK: On Roxio Media Experience
* Plays OK: On VideoLAN VLC media player
* No audio: On Windows Media Player 11 (but video plays OK)
* No Audio: On Real Player (but video plays OK)
* "Failed to open audio device": Intervideo WinDVD (no audio or video)

I am running Windows XP with all the latest fixes, including KB888656 which I was prompted to install after first running Creator 9.

So, my 5 year old, el-cheapo set-top DVD player plays it fine, but the latest Miscrosoft technology (Media Player 11) plays the video but not the sound!

What type of AVI file is it? Maybe there is no codec on your system for it.
Also, just as clarification, there is no Roxio media Creator 11 (yet!)

There's obviously nothing wrong with the disc. Sounds like an audio codec issue or WMP11 DRM issue. This is a Windows issue that really has nothing to do with Roxio. If you used defaults to create the DVD, I would guess the DVD was encoded with AC3 audio. Download the open source filter here and see if WMP can play the disc.

All the three input video files (mpg and AVI) play fine with Windows Media Player. However, when used by Media Creator 9 to buiild a DVD, I get the results I reported.

Yes, MyDVD converts the audio to AC3!!! Have you tried the AC3 filter?

I did use the defaults when creating the DVD, and WMP 11 plays commercial DVDs OK.

I am not a great expert on all this multi-media stuff, so can you confirm the I need to try "AC3Filter 1.45b" off the link you suggest (out of the several ones listed)?

I have already spent too many hours mucking about with open source DVD authoring solutions before finally buying Media Creator 9, thinking it would be a no-brainer "install - run - burn - play" solution - I don't want to end up in a bigger mess still!

Like I said earlier - this is a WINDOWS ISSUE and not a Roxio problem. The disc you created plays fine on a DVD player. If the disc doesn't play in Windows Media Player then that is not an issue with EMC 9. I have no idea what you have on your computer. Only you know that. The AC3 filter is a very stable product and used by millions. V1.45b is the newest version and I do have it installed.

Just so you know, Windows Media Player 11 has caused ALL KINDS of problems. I don't and won't use it for any reason.

I've just tried your open source AC3 filter suggestion,. and it's cured all my problems! Why can't MS get this right? ANOTHER reason to go Linux...?

You're welcome and glad it worked. AC3 is patented by Dolby and usually has to be licensed and probably why it isn't included with Windows. I'm not really sure how the open source community can release a filter without paying royalties. Anyway, that filter works with most software.
