Didn't you say you had a good video of the movie already? The one with bad audio. Use the video from the DVD (copy VOB files to the hard drive and use those in VideoWave) and then use the audio from the tape (you said you have done this in the past.)
Is the audio on the original tape bad? If so, you are out of luck if unless it is minor distortion and you can fix it in Sound Editor. You can also try Bias Sound Soap or Gold Wave. Both of those audio programs have free trial (I think.)
If neither of the above is a correct interpretation of your problem, perhaps if you clarify?
Start to save up for a new analog to digital converter (not video card). You can A/D converters as cards or as USB devices. How well they work on your computer does rely on you video card and how good your computer is. You've been around for awhile, why haven't you added your computer specs to your signature?
