I just downloaded EMC9. There were 2 files that I downloaded.
They are as follows:
1Z22TZX0Rxx_EMCSuitev9... and
2006EZS0R03_ContentCDv9.1.exe

Which one do I install first?
Also, I have EMC5, should I uninstall it first?

Suite first - then content.

So long as the packet writing end of ECD5 is disabled, it should install fine

Don't forget to back up both to CDs in case you may need them again (best way is to open them with winrar or winzip (they're both self-extracting archives) and save them to folders and use the folder contents to create the backup CDs

Okay, suite first. That answered my first question after buying the Easy Media Creator 9 Suite. (The download instructions seem to think there is only one file.)

Is ECD5 some version of Easy CD and DVD Creator? Sorry if this is naive, but how would I know if I have it on my system? I do have something called "Dell Roxio Creator LE". Am I likely to run into problems?

Easy CD 5 is a very old app - to find out if it's there, check in C:\Program Files Roxio

The name changed from Easy CD to Easy Media Creator at version 7

I would uninstall the Dell Roxio Creator LE, which is an OEM version of Easy CD Creator, might be v 5 or 6, depending on when you bought your PC.

There's no uninstall with the package, but several of the modules show up in "Add or Remove Programs":

Are there any of these I shouldn't remove? Anything else I should delete?

From other threads, it looks like I should shut down McAfee and disable my internet connection before starting the install, too. Anything else you can think of?

Remove DLA - that will clash with Drag to Disc (and packet writing tends to be a shade unreliable, especially for backup purposes)
