Using Videowave 8; why is it that the lengh of the show decreases when you add transitions? It's a little counterintuitive that adding something reduces the overall time.

Well, think about it a minute. If you use a disolve transition, you're going to need a couple of seconds from each transition which is going to create a shorter video.
The transitions actually 'overlap' scene 1 and scene 2. It's a little like tying two ropes together. The total length of the rope won't be as long because you've used some of the rope from each length to tie the knot.
Does that make sense?

That is an exellent analogy, ml. I have always found it difficult to explain (and to some degree understand) the loss of time, but that really brings it into focus.

Yes, it actually does; thank you and that really is a great analogy. So, is it safe to say that if I inserted a transition and set the timing to 4-seconds, the duration of the pictures on either side would be reduced by 2-seconds each?

Emmmmm...... I'm not quite certain that it's that simple a calculation. It's an approximation of what happens, but I've never really tested it to see if it comes out to a whole number.
