Full Version: MyDVD hangs when trying to burn an ISO

Greetings all, I have an issue that is keeping me from finishing my project. I open MyDVD and open my saved final product of video and still photos (just under 2hrs). I want to burn to a DVD+R DL. I have 48 secs and 57MB free according to disk size on the bottom of the MyDVD window. When I click the "burn" button in preview area, MyDVD validates the project, begins to encode the movie then stops several seconds into the process, displays the grey MPEG screen then hangs at 2 percent. Task manager does not report that MyDVD stops responding, and nothing but system idle process domintates most of the CPU. I can click to cancel the encoding process without the program crashing. Alternating between the software and hardware grapics options in the tools pull down menu creates the same results. I have given the program several hours on 2 occasions to try and complete the iso but still hangs at same spot. The source file, or hardware does not seem to be the issue. I created a separate test project in VideoWave consisting of 7 different small clips including the source file at which the program hangs as described earlier (total time on this one, just under an hour). I moved those clips into MyDvd and put them in a random order, created some quick chapters based on panels, created basic menus, saved the project as test, clicked burn button to create iso and had no problems finishing. Further, I used Disk Copier to burn the iso to a dvd-r using the same dvd burner and had no problems testing it on my set top dvd player. When i go back to my real project and click burn again, MyDVD validates the project, begins to encode the movie then stops several seconds into the process, displays the grey MPEG screen then hangs at 2 percent. Task manager reports that MyDVD is still running, and again, nothing but system idle process domintates most of the CPU. Like before, I can click to cancel the encoding process without the program crashing MyDVD. Alternating between the software and hardware grapics options in the tools pull down menu still creates the same results. I dont want to start this project over from scratch which is I am hoping someone else has seen this and can offer a quicker solution that just starting over and hoping everything turns out fine. I have also done many hours of forum research and have done clean installs of the OS, EMC9, video drivers, as well as installed the Sonic PX Engine, and followed probably most of the suggestions posted without luck. I really want this to work, any suggestions? Thanks to anyone in advance who can suggest something other than starting over.

pc specs are as follows:
Dell Dimension 4600, 2.80Ghz P4 BIOS A08
NVIDIA GeForce4 MX4000, 64MB MEM Driver ver 9.1.4.7 date 8-11-06
Sony DVD-RW DL, AW-Q170A ver 1.7
WinXp MCE 2002, SP2 on 80 GB (64GB free) on NTFS
1GB RAM
Soundblaster Live! 24 Bit
Maxtor One Touch 320GB External (USB) HD (210GB Free)
Pinnacle Capture Card
No AV or FW installed, Windows FW and updates disabled
EMC 9.05 Suite, No other burning sw installed
dxdiag shows Direct X9.0c

First thing to do is to check for updates to your Video Card.
gman2000
I think I have the latest video driver. I went from version 7.7.7.2, date 6-15-05 (which came with the video card) to 9.1.4.5, date 8-8-06 to 9.1.4.7, date 8-11.06. The MSI site (the video card maker) lists another driver but it is not compatible with this card. This makes me believe that I have the latest driver. I did do clean installs (uninstalling each from add/remove, rebooting, then reinstalling, for each driver, not to mention the clean installs ive done of the OS, emc9). Besides, I have tested, now twice, that the process does work and does encode and burn 2 different iso files. I just can't get my primary project encoded and burned as described in my first post. Any other suggestions out there?
gman2000
Ok, I did find and install another updated video driver, specs listed in signature, this time I got it from The NVidia website and not from the MSI site (card manufacturer). However, the results are the same, my main project hangs at the start of the encoding screen, while my test projects (now at 3, with the same files and sources that the main project contains) encode and create iso file which I can then burn successfully. I will go back to NVIDA website and see if they have another driver for this video card. Will check back with results soon. Any other suggestions?

I did go back to the NVidia website and it seems that this driver is the latest one. Same results while trying to encode the main project and the test projects. thanks again for any suggestions that are made.

I would guess that somehow you main project became corrupted. If the test projects are the same, go with that!
gman2000
Unfortunatly the test projects are not the same or I would use them in a heartbeat. The test projects only include quick 10 minute videos from the same source files that i used on my main project (to verify I did not have corrupted files), including the video passage that MyDVD hangs at everytime. I still get the same results as before. Anyone else doing research on this have any other input?

It looks like your video card doesn't have the horses for the extended rendering and encoding.
gman2000
Could you please explain how? Mr. Hardin has near the same video card, I dont think he has the same issues. I know it's not near the top of the line these days, but I would think that an AGP card with 64MB of mem would be enough. It sure exceeds the reccommended specs stated on the box for EMC9. Besides the rendering and encoding process works for the OTHER test projects i have done. How would the rendering and encoding process not work for this one?

Your card is a very low end one - it doesn't support Direct 3D which is a requirement for video work

Check what is said about it on the nVidia forum

I verified that the video card is in single display mode, with settings to max performance. I adjusted windows in performance options from the advanced tab in system properties to max performance. The graphics test in the application settings states that for the software on average there are over 60 FPS on the render only and the render and copy is over 35FPS. The hardware test shows render only averages over 60FPS and render and copy is at 35FPS also. The test then states that it defaults to use the software. Are there any others out there using this video card for EMC9 video editing work? Like i stated earlier, i can still create iso files using MyDVD and the render and encoding process runs fine on test projects that contain the same (just shorter and with only basic menus and effects) source files as the main project im trying to finish. The release notes on the NVidia drivers from their website state that this card has added support for Direct 3D, DirectX in the last several releases. Here is the link to those notes http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_93.71_2.html I think that i can still make some kind of adjustment to my main project to make it work. Is there an option or tool i perhaps overlooked in the program (i am new to EMC9) that can help me find where in my main project that this encoding and rendering process is hanging? Can anyone tell me how the encoding and rendering process works when "burn" is clicked from the main MyDVD window? I know this info may be overkill but i hope it helps resolve this issue for someone else also. Thanks again for all the help and posts.

Added notes. Several days ago, i did have a problem while creating my main project maybe the extra info will trigger another reader out there that may have a similar issue. On the main project im trying to finish, i was using MyDVD to create menus and adjust links for all the video, setting thumbnails, trying to work thru "overlapping buttons on menu" and a link error or 2 to get my project validated. I dont remember at what exact point but i began getting the R6025 - pure virtual function call error. My offending program was VideoUI 9\VideoWave.exe That is when i started coming here to work things out. In between all the negative posts there was good info. I used the info to install a new SATA HD and did clean installs of OS, EMC9, drivers like stated in the posts and had to reassociate some of the files due to my drive letters changing slightly (2gb USB flash drive that had a sound effect and some photos i wanted). After many hours of more work, I was able to preview the entire 2 hr project (trying to burn to dvd+rw dl) without problems and was able to validate it without errors. But then i go to click burn to create the iso file and the hang during the encoding/rendering process occors. I can still create test projects using the same source files with VideoWave, drag them to MyDVD, create iso files and burn them to dvd using this new setup. Could this R6025 error corrupt the main project somehow but still be able to preview and validate it? Thanks again for your responses and good help.

Maybe nVidia are claiming that they 'added' Direct 3D support' (although how you can make a piece of hardware fully compliant by software is stretching my imagination a bit), the real point is this - your card does NOT fill all the requirements to do video work.

I admit the Roxio site can be misleading - after all, I'd find difficulty even running XP on their minimum specs, but you need to realise that 'minimum' spec is exactly that - it will let you burn a CD, but that's about all. What it will not do is let you do any video work.

I'm sorry but that's how it goes

Thank you for your input. Could someone tell me how this program does its encoding and rendering? I am trying to understand how this program works for one project and not the other. If i could not render and encode ANY project i make, i would gladly write this off and start over with something else, but i have made this program work with its current configuration. Does anyone else use this video card with their video editing? But more important, are there any other suggestions from anyone else out there as to what to do for my situation?
gman2000
ok, now i have added a new video card NVidia GeForce 6200 A-LE, driver- 6.14.11.6371, date- 9-17-07, uninstalled old drivers from add/remove, recreated the project from scratch again using VideoWave, using the original source videos from a HI8 camcorder, still pictures, lots of video effects from VW, and a sound effect or 2. I use MyDVD to put it all together with menus, etc, go to burn the DVD, the program seems to finish the process to normalize the audio, then seemed to finish burning the iso but when the process finishes, it then kicks out the 8004520c error while encoding movie error. Starting the program from Start-all programs-roxio- video has the same outcome as does trying to use the software process from the options menu but now the process hangs again after it begins to encode the movie after about 10 seconds, shows the grey mpeg screen then hangs about 20 seconds after the program begins the encoding process. What can i try now?

If someone still doing research before buying this product is still reading this then i should tell you to NOT use emc for serious video editing projects. as soon as i can i will spend the extra money for another program. This product and their website is misleading when it comes to explaining exactly what this program needs as far as minimum or recommended requirements for ALL of their programs in this app. I know that computer power is needed for video editing and i have no misconceptions about that fact as i have made emc9x work for me to burn a dvd. but it has been at the expense of many hours of work, reinstall after reinstall of either drivers, the program itself or the os, all of which take more time and is COUNTERPRODUCTIVE. I finally got my main project out but not without problem after problem that i have to research in these forums (thanks to all who post on this site for your help). for the record, i will say that i was able to use both video cards that were explained earlier (yeah after more research time than i was willing to give, and yes i did use both video cards to test this theory, no matter what the earlier posts in this thread state) to finish my project.

I have had all the problems you have described...I am wondering how you eventually got your project out. I also have an Nvidia driver (GeForce FX 5200) and am now assuming that I need to invest in a better video card. Any suggestions you have would be most appreciated. My project is quite long as well, almost 5 Gs. Thank you for any help you can offer.

Please start a new thread explaining what you are trying to do and how you are trying to do it. Posting that your project is 5GBs long tells us nothing since time length of a project is the more important parameter. Your video card (I was using the same one until it failed) should have no problems with any of the video work you are doing, just make sure you have the latest drivers from the nVidia site as wellas the latest version of DirctX 9.0c
