I transfer vhs, 8mm and 8mm reel to reel for a living. I have Roxio 10. I did a job before Christmas that entailed 16 DVDs after transfer and then i made copies. Well my worst nightmare came true, she said that NONE of the disks worked. I have a Phillips DVD player and they all worked. Those DVD's were DVD+
I made her a copy on a DVD - she said that it worked in her Zenith and jumped, stop etc on their phillips. Can anyone tell me if a blank DVD+/- is made and if so where can I find it.

If that is not possible how or where can I get information on what type of DVD can be played on what brand player.

Sorry, but due to the conflicting "standards" you can't make a DVD that is both 'plus' and 'dash'.

I and several of my friends have tried for ages to get information on what types of discs various players want to see, but it is very hard to find out what one particular model of one particular brand of player likes, let alone a list of all models of that one brand or all brands. Because of that it seems very hit-and-miss.

DVD+ discs can have their 'booktype' set on many drives, either through a special utility which comes with the drive or through programs such as DVDInfo or DVDInfoPro which come with Easy Media Creator 9. Setting the booktype to "DVD-ROM" in this way gives a much better chance of compatibility with older DVD players. DVD- discs cannot have their booktype modified.

I have been transferring straight off off the tape onto the dVd. Would it be best to put it on my hard drive and convert to an mpeg format before burning or does that make a difference? Also thanks for the above information it does help.

I would output to DVD best quality and make a ISO Image or DVD Video Folder Set, yes on the hard drive. Then use Video Copy and Convert to burn it to disc.

Just to add to what you said, DVD-R discs don't need to be book typed. They are already DVD-ROM. And, not all burners have the ability to book type DVD+R discs, which tricks set top DVD players to read them as DVD-ROM discs. And no software can make the non-book type burners, book type.

a DVD -R is a DVD -R after burned and looked at in any disc info tool. A DVD + R is a DVD +R after burned and looked at in any disc info tool.

A DVD +R, DVD + RW, and DVD +R DL with setting the booktype to DVD -Rom produces a DVD -Rom after burned and looked at in any disc info tool!

That's quite wrong! They are DVD-R, which is quite a different booktype from DVD-ROM, and they cannot be modified.

This is another reason why DVD+R discs are so much more versatile. They can be modified to show the DVD-ROM booktype which is normally only carried by pressed discs, and which the older DVD players look for.

The terminology may be wrong, but the older set top DVD players, were made when they would only read -R discs. With the advent of book type settings, those older players can read +R discs. That is the point that I was trying to make.

There seems to be little value in adding wrong information to somebody's post. That's what we've been trying to tell someone else for ages. It just muddies the water.

Still, I think I now understand the point you were trying to make.

And, the sole reason for book typing is to trick the DVD player into playing the movie on the disc. Correct?
