I have a Sony VAIO "Media Edition" PC with Windows XP "Media Edition" OS. The PC is specifically set up for multi media operations with several sets of "S-Video" and "Composite" (yellow, red, and white jacks) located on the front and back panels. Trouble is --- I can't seem to get connected to these inputs to record a couple songs (from my cassette player) for background in VideWave. I thought I was on to something out of Capture when I found a selection of "Smart Capture" (which says it captures from analog sources such as TV, VCR, etc) but that never materializes. I have tried several other software programs but same thing - never finds (or presents a selection for) these analog inputs.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. (Please keep in mind I am barely a novice at computing)

Have you tried either Easy Audio Capture or LP and Tape Assistant.
You should be able to capture from the Line-In on either of those.
When you open the LP and Tape Assitant try doing the Recording Setup first to see if the inputs show up and you can get a signal from them.

Where would I find the recommended software? Are they a pert of Roxio, Sony VAIO, or stand alone software?

As I said I am really out of my league here so you will have to bare with me and be very specific.

I do appreciate the help very much!

In addition, you'll probably be at connecting to a stereo 1/8" jack, not the red/white connectors, but that depends on exactly what hardware you have and how it comes out to the outside world.

If you go to Start,Programs and find Roxio, point at it(or click it) and another menu will pop up.Click on LP and Tape Assistant.
When it opens there is a box that says "Recording Setup".Follow the setup directions there, finding a diagram that resembles what you're hooking up.
Those jacks that you're trying to use are normally meant for video, but may work for Audio only.
Even better, try and see if you have a Line-in on the back panel and connect to there by following one of the diagrams.Like Dave said you may need an adapter to go from the RCA's to a 1/8" jack that would normally be the Line-in.

I think you need to dig out the operating manual for that Sony VAIO. ( Usually Sony has their manual online under Support.)

You need to find out which of those 'several sets of S-Video and Composite' jacks are for input and not output.

Whether the correct set of jacks will work with EMC is uncertain. Sometimes Sony uses inputs that will only work with the software they have included on the computer or on an applications cd that comes with some computers.

I've said it before and I'll say it again - the best part of EMC is all of you! Collectively you have pulled it out of the fire again. I had forgotten that the VAIO manual was on line - tore up a perfectly good study looking through every drawer in the place to no avail!

Anyway, here is the result - tbrewst, d_deweywright, and ml hit it on the head in that the jacks I was using were not the right ones. Found a jack in the back that is "IN" so the signal was finally getting through. Activated "Capture" and "Audio Device" and wha-la!

Just for info. I tried the "Start, All programs, ROXIO" is all there but beyond that - no "LP and Tape Assistant" (just Capture, VideoWave, etc) on the EMC version that I have. No sweat though, as I am up and running with the help that all of you have provided. You have made my day (and a cold and blustery one it is at that!)

Thanks ever so much for the attention!

Excellent! Glad you got an answer to lead you to a successful solution! As for the "no "LP and Tape Assistant"", you probably have an OEM version of EMC, which doesn't include it.

Congratulations!

You're welcome. I have a Sony VAIO computer and can never find the hard copy of the manual when I need it. That's how I knew where to go to find it. laugh.gif

Sorry for the late reply but glad you got it working.
Dave's right,I'm not suprised you didn't find the Assistant where I said.I was just looking at the version 7.5 I have.Sorry if that confused you at all.
Good luck and have fun.
