I am trying to use Backup MyPc to create daily Incremental backups to a Hard Disk.
However, because it is going to File, rather than CD/DVD, there is no option of appending to existing media - only overwriting.
This means I cannot restore my files/folders to a couple of days prior.

Is there something I am missing? Or is this standard behavior?

Are you sure you are not doing a differential backup? An incremental will back up everything changed since the last full or incremental backup. A differential will backup everything since the last full backup. It makes for faster restores, but slower backups, while an incremental makes for faster backups, but slower restores. As I am not at home, I can't remember where the setting is or if it is available.

I selected Incremental. Then I hit the 'More Options' button and change the settings to 'Append' mode and hit OK.
Then I select 'File' for where to backup, and go back into 'More Options'. Now 'Overwrite' is selected, and the other options are now all disabled.
I then created a schedule. Each scheduled incremental backup will now overwrite the previous. I cannot go back several backups ago, to restore a deleted file or to return a file back to the state it was a few days ago.

Not sure why that would happen, unless the job did not get saved properly for some reason. Only suggestion I can give is do a full backup now. Not sure how often you do backups, but doing a full backup on occasion will save the hassle of having a lot of restores to process if you have to go that route.

I have a few GB to backup. I'm keen to use the Incremental backups for 2 reasons:
1. Smaller/quicker daily backups
2. Restore files to a state prior to the previous backup, rather than just to the state of the previous backup.

It just seems odd that Backup MyPC cannot append to existing backups if the backups are being sent to the HDD. It looks like it will only do appends if the backups are going to CD/DVD.

I hadn't played much with BUMP, but seeing your post inspired me. You're right, it doesn't give you the option to append when going to a file.

I started by creating a full backup of a directory. Then I created an incremental backup to that (after changing some files). It automatically went to a new file name. I changed some files again, and went to re-run the incremental job. It warned me that it was going to overwrite the previous incremental backup and gave me an option to change the file name, so I could keep the previous incremental, and that worked okay. I agree that it ought to automatically create a new file.

I'm presuming you've got your backups scheduled to run automatically? And in that case, apparently it just overwrites with no warning? At this point, the only solution I can see is to run it manually and increment the file name. A nuisance to be sure.

Yeah - it was the scheduled backups I was having problems with. It would not append to existing files or even create new files. Each incremental would completely overwrite the previous backup, which sort of defeats the purpose of "incrementals". I noticed that it did work for manual backups though. But it was automatic nightly backups I was trying to achieve.
