Whenever i try to burn an avi file to a dvd, my roxio emc 9 says that the disc space is not enough by a minute or two. even after the quality is selected to be: fit to disc. is there a way to burn this video to a dvd. i have windows vista home premium.

is there a connection between the quality of the disc in this because i usually use the cheap store dvds (like the tesco ones), and it worked fine with my trial nero version.

Does the error indicate "disk" or "disc"?

Disk = HDD
Disc = DVD Media

Leave the Quality setting at High Quality (HQ), then burn to an image (.iso) file, not directly to disc. Once the image file has finished encoding, open Disc Copier, browse to that image file, and burn it to a disc.

Also, if the Disc size marker on the lower left corner indicate not enough space on a 4.7gb DVD, try switching that selection to 8.5gb DVD.

i tried that method. but it still exceeds the size. anyway you dont make any sense: increasing the quality of the movie increases the size of the iso file. and thelarger the iso file, the larger is the dvd size required. i only have a 4.5 gb dvds i dont wanna buy 8.5GB ones.

is there not a workaround, or is nero vision my only choice.

edit: if i try to burn other short sized avi files it works fine, it may have something to do with the file size of the avi.

In this case, I suggest going to Project Settings--> Uncheck "Fit to disc" and reduce the bitrate. Either way it has to undergo compression. BTW SL media will fit only upto 4.2/3 gb.

I have burned many DVD's, using the method that I suggested. Disc Copier compresses the .iso file to make it fit on a DVD, and the results are better than using the Fit to Disc method. If you still get the message, do what malatekid said to do, even though you have a 4.7GB disc in the drive. It is a software quirk.
