I recently changed drives around at the house, putting some older hardware and programs on an older machine while upgrading. One of the programs was EMC8 and it works find. The problem is that I no longer have any sound on this machine at all. This is a problem since it is my movie system and general workhorse for limited applications and cruising the net. The newer machine is work related so I have to keep it innocent of the net.

I was just wondering if anybody else had their sound disappear. I know that my speakers still work because I can get them to do some nice feedback squeals but I can't even get the simplest wav or system main to sound off.

Did you check that the sound was enabled and not muted? Far too easily done and then overlooked :;

Also, is the problem still there on a clean XP installation (no other apps). If you have actually just installed XP, then make sure you loaded the drivers - XP is not very good at adding audio drivers. Also, check in control panel, audio and see if it sees the sound card

Sorry, the sound card is built in to the system and I have had xp on it pretty much since it came out so it wasn't a recent installation. I have used it for about 6 years, yeah I know it is old but what can I say, it does what I want. I simply moved a sony DVD recorder to this system because the new system came with such. Since it is a work system, I don't have the capacity to install anything new without clearing it with the nice gentlemen downstairs.

The slider bar which is usually to the right of the date and time is what has disappeared. The computer says the sound card is working fine and gives me all sort of access to the control panel but nothing comes out but white noise.

I have removed the EMC but the slider is still missing and I get nothing.

Go into the Control Panel>Select Sounds and Audio Devices, click on the Volume Tab and select "Place volume icon in the Taskbar".

That gives me a little speaker icon but no slider/volume control. I guess I will have to remove the audio drivers and see if they reload.

Click on the icon for the slider.

In the same place that ogdens sent you to in the Control Panel go to the third tab that says Audio.On that tab make sure that the devices that are listed are actually your sound card.If they are not,use the drop down to change it to your sound card.
