Hello,

I have a CD-RW that I copied Word documents to on 6/15/2008 using EC7 -copy files to disc (WinXP)

Every time I try to open the Word document folder on this disc, my computer freezes.

Is there anything I can try to open this folder and retrieve the files?

If the problem is with the disc itself you might try CDRoller I think there's a trial period to test it out.

Have you tried copying those files to your hard drive, first, then open them?

I cannot do anything once the folders are displayed. When I click on a folder my computer freezes.

I just downloaded the trial version of CDRoller, it was running for over 4 hours and would not let me access anything on my PC. I finally booted the PC so I could check this forum.

I'm afraid that it sounds as if your disc is fubar (if even cdroller freezes trying to read it)

CDRoller did not actually freeze up or freeze the computer it just said "...., please wait (can't remember first part). But as I tried the CD on another PC and laptop and they did freeze when I opened Word documents, I guess you are right.

What would cause a fairly recent CD to do that? I immediately put the CD into a case and haven't touched it til this week.

They can just die for a variety of reasons really.

I had one that went belly-up after two uses (and never did get it to even format or erase after that). I gave up totally on packet writing at that stage
