I recently spent a huge amount of time organsing 17 years worth of F1 highlights on to Verbatim DVD+R Dual Layer discs.

Every single one of these burned fine and played perfectly all the way through on my Sony DVD Recorder, My JVC DVD player and my PC.

Heres the thing - when I come to watch them again about 6 months later, they seem to have degraded to the point that they will start fine but as they get towards the end of the first layer they skip and freeze and then won't even move to the second layer. They still play on my PC (at the moment) and I saved image files of them all when I created them in the first place but does anyone know how I can avoid the degrading issue?

List your DVD Drive ID string as shown in device manager, under DVD/CD-Rom drives.

At what X speed did you burn the DVD+R DL Verbatims?

What software application burned the disc's?

Download the free, #1 in my signature CD-DVD Speed renamed DiscSpeed, run a disc quality check on the failing disc's and post the results.

How did you store the disc's, details?

The burn speed was the lowest I could use as I understand that this improves reliability, so 4x

I burned the DVDs using MyDVD in Creator 10

I've downloaded the software you suggest but for some reason this won't let me run a Disc Quality test (I see from the user guide that this facility isn't supported by all burners). I have run a Scan Disc test and the Surface scan came back at 100% Good

The discs are all stored in standard Jewel cases vertically on a shelf in our heated study.

Hope this helps, if you have any suggestions on how to carry out the Disc Quality test I'll be happy to try them!

The CRC Read Error Test came back with 0% Bad/Suspect sectors but the PIPO test is apparently not possible

Did you play them on other DVD players??

Yes, when they were first burned they played fine on the Sony and the JVC. Now they fail on the Sony and the JVC. I've since bought a PS3 and some of them play OK on that but they really now only play reliably on the PC and even then, one of them skipped and stuttered badly at the layer change point.

I googled for the issue and found some things similar but not exactly the same.

This is the closest but there are others. Note that these issues are dated quite awhile ago.

I could image that there could be some manufacturing problems with the ones you bought. Did you get them recently?

The majority, of the regulars here, use Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden media. I don't think that Taiyo Yuden makes DL media, though.

Google is a wonderful tool. Interpreting the results is the problem.

Verbatim DVD +R DL are the best on the market.

Let me do some checking your drive should scan in DVDInfo Pro.

Try one other thing now. Make a folder on the hard drive, put one of these DL disc's in a DVD Drive, copy and paste the audio_ts and video_ts folder from the disc to the folder on the hard drive. If it copies it didn't find read errors either. Do come back and let us know the results.

The DVD Info Pro screen came back exactly like your screen shot - I haven't been able to find anything that will run tests that look like the other screen shots you posted.

I'm at work now so won't be able to try the other test you suggest until probably tomorrow but will certainly report back.

As ever, I do really appreciate everyone's advice and help.

OK - I copied the Video_TS folder across (there wasn't an audio_ts file, there was a Roxioplasma one though!) and that copied across with no problems at all.

Any other thoughts?

It could be the software botched the Layer Break, why it played fine before and not now (unless the disc's have read errors) is strange. I don't think that one disc has read errors, if it did it shouldn't of copied, don't mean the other disc's don't have errors! Do you have a friend with a Lite-On Burner to run the disc quality check?

You list a Sony DVD Recorder, model and age? What model and age is the JVC? I have a JVC 7 disc changer 2002 era and it plays Verbatim DL + R disc's fine!

Does your house see alot of dust and humidity? Any cigarette smoke?

My Sony DVD Recorder is an RDR GX300 bought in 2005. The JVC player is an XV-S302 bought in 2002. The problem also shows up on the PS3 though and that was only bought in December 08.

I don't know anyone else who has a Lite On drive but I'm considering getting one - Ebay has them for about £20, if that would help. There are no heat / humidity issues and no one smokes here, plus we are extremely keen on not having any dust around so I don't think storage or environment is an issue.

Dust circulation in a computer is something that you can't prevent.

When you dust things in the house, dust particles are in the air - a computer fan sucks air in and blows the heated air back out - the dist particles settle inside the box and there's nothing anyone can do about it.
