Hi.

Im burning/copying DVD's and roxio only ever gets up to about 6x when the discs are 16x and the burn speed is set to 16x.

I've tried three different types of media:

Sony DVD-R
TDK DVD-R
Infiniti Sarurai DVD-R

My DVD Burner:

Lite-on LH-20A1H

PC Spec:

Intel Quad Core 2.6
4GB RAM
Windows XP SP3
Geforce 9800GX2
Samsung 1TB HDD

I've checked and my burner has the latest firmware and DMA mode is set to ultra 4. Could it be my dvd reader (source drive) that's slowing down the burn speed?

Also i can't find the burn log anywhere on my pc? Where are they stored?

What speed does the burn go at if you make a .iso image file first and burn from that?

If that burns at 16x, then the problem is down to the reader not supplying data fast enough

Also, if they are both on the same IDE cable, it will slow down as the controller has to switch between the two drives for read/write operations

Right, i've created an iso image of the DVD and burnt that, unfortunatly it remains on 6x ... so it can't be the reader slowing it down ..

Is the reader on the same cable?

If so, check that is also set to UDMA4 (it's possible that it isn't and that will slow down any other drive attached)

Yup it's on the same cable but the reader is Ultra DMA 2, not 4 like the writer ..

Would it slow the burner down even though it's not being used?

I'll shut down, put the reader on the secondary channel and try again .. i'll post once i'm done.

I do know that two different drives on the same cable can affect each other - just wasn't 100% certain if that's what was happening this time

One other possibility (it has happened to me with CDs before) is that the discs are mislabelled. I had a batch of '52x' CDs but they would never burn at that speed - I ran them through DVD Info Pro and lo and behold - they were actually 32x that were mislabelled. Check in case that's what's happening

Ahh .. slight problem .. my mobo only has one ide slot! #$^@ modern boards ..

It's got 4 SATA slots so may have to invest in two new drives ..

If the DVDs are SATA they shouldn't interfere with each other - but if they're IDE, just pull out the power connector on the DVD-ROM and see if that speeds things up (that does the same as removing it but it's a lot easier to get in and out )

Also check with DVD Info Pro (if you have that installed)

One other thought - check for a firmware update for the DVD-RW - as the system depends on the drive recognising 16x discs by the info track, it's possible that's where the problem is
