I recently had to do a clean install of Windows; XP Home w/SP2 and, of course, IE 7. When I put the EMC install disc in the DVD Writer/CD Writer combo drive, I get an error message that there is no disc in the drive, the computer hangs, and I have to do a Ctrl+Alt+Del reboot. If I put the install disc in the CD ROM drive, I get this: "1607-Unable to Install Installshield Scripting Runtime." This even happens in Safe Mode. I don't want to uninstall IE 7 and then reinstall it, as that would mean downloading many Microsoft Updates. How do I get EMC 7 to install? When I first purchased EMC 7 (in 2004?), I remember similar problems, but there was a work around for this issue.

IE 7 effectively kills EMC 7, as does WMP 11.

You can try copying the EMC 7 CD(s) to your hard drive and install from the hard drive. Even if you get it installed, there are many components that won't run properly, or at all, with IE 7 installed.

I still have a disk for Easy CD Creator 5. Will that work with IE 7 and WMP 11? One has to wonder why Roxio hasn't fixed these program conflicts as those were known a long time ago.

No, it won't work.

Roxio didn't cause the problem, Microsoft did. Sales of EMC 7 had ceased, over 2 years prior to Vista's IE 7 came out. Roxio fixed the EMC 9 version, which came out about the same time as Vista.

Not overlooking the fact that ECD5 was two years older again - that came out when most people were using Windows 9x

So if I uninstall IE 7, download IE 6, and use WMP 9, EMC 7 will install and work properly? But if I later move to IE 7 and WMP 11, EMC 7 will cease functioning properly? Do I understand this correctly?
gi7omy
Absolutely correct - IE7 and WMP11 are backports from Vista and will wreck anything prior to EMC 9.1

If you uninstall IE 7, it should revert to IE 6, unless you had IE 7 installed, and then installed Windows SP 3. If that is the case, then the only way to get rid of IE 7 is to uninstall XP's SP3.

I uninstalled IE 7 and, yes, it reverted to IE 6. I also have WMP 9, but that is not installed. I've tried again to install EMC 7, and it won't work. On the DVD drive, I keep getting a message that the drive is not ready. On the CD ROM drive, I can get the install to start, but then get a "Could not open the Certificate Reading DLL" message. Is this a lost cause? I am really frustrated with this.

Try using the Microsoft Cleanup Utility to get rid of all Roxio and Sonic files on your computer, reboot, then try to reinstall.

grandpabruce,
I used the WIN utility and removed some Sonic files; no Roxio files were present. I was then able to successfully install EMC 7. Strangely, though, even after deleting the Sonic files, the DVD drive would not recognize the install disk. The CD-ROM drive did, but the install would not automatically run. I had to open the drive through My Computer and start the install file. And that program takes a verrrry long time to install...over 30 minutes.

I'm going to open a new discussion, "EMC 7 and IE 6/IE 7, to comment on something I discovered. Hopefully, that will help someone in the future.

Thank you for your suggestions and help!

You are welcome.

I also did a write-up, similar to your new thread, a bit over 2 years ago, when I found that IE 7, and WMP killed EMC 7 and 7.5.

They also killed EMC 8, but I did't care, because that version had junk encoding, and I only had it on my computer for testing.

Once you get rid of IE7, download and run this MS utility (it needs to be run from a command prompt)

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...;displaylang=en

That will stop Windows from automatically re-installing it
