What are the advantages/disadvantages of using MPEG-2 rather than AVI DV and are there any restrictions on using either ? In awe as always !

For what ??
The best format of video to use for the job depends on just what "the job" is, doesn't it ?

Yes!
guess you are going to want more info…
DV AVI – uncompressed - fast to edit – lossless format
Downside… really big files.
MPEG – small files
Downside… compressed – loses quality if re-rendered a time or two - can suck the life out of an editor
You have to choose. If archival – DV AVI hands down.
If mundane, 10th ranked high school basketball warm-up game… mpeg!

Normally for holiday movies, weddings & family stuff - up to about an hour long. usually burn a couple of copies then save disc image in hard drive back up
