Hello. It seems that the only DVD's that plays consistently in the home movies I created are Taiyo Yuden. I have tried various brands, particularly Verbatim with no consistent playback results. This has been an ongoing problem. They constantly stall and skip. I am talking about 4 different brands of DVD players: sony, philips, panosonic, and sylvania. My mother uses a JVC brand DVD player and she has yet to complain of anything stalling with the Verbatim brand. So I don't know what's with all this. I have tried both + & -. So far the only one's that will play consistently are the Taiyo Yuden (-)dash brand. I haven't tried their + brand. Yet, the only place you can get them are online. None of the local stores carry them. There's no way from looking at the box what brand it really is. I find all this pretty discouraging when so many poor quality DVD's are sold. There's no point to buying DVD's that are of lower quality if they don't work well, particularly with DVD's players that don't have a high tolerance. I don't know who to blame. Any comment appreciated.

It is the Players more than the media…

The more expensive Players are more sensitive whereas the cheap Players tend to play anything you close the tray on.

I hit one that would not play any burned DVD unless it was a DVD-RW. Another that required ‘dash’ media only.

In my circle of family and friends Verbatim works fine but TY’s are considered the best!

It seems odd that the more expensive player are less likely to work. Why buy an expensive player?

The expensive sets use proprietary optical drives that are well built like a Rolls-Royce.

The cheap ones just use off the shelf computer drives.

The PC drives are designed to accept as much as possible. The RR drives run on Premium Leaded
