Does it still crash if you use Video Wave (preferred) to do the slide show?
Those type of problems are typically hardware related. Do you have a laptop or desk top? If desk top, have you cleaned out the inside of your computer lately? Use dry air; you can find it locally. Of course, turn it off and pull the power cord before you open it. If laptop, you might want to consider getting a laptop cooler.
Are you getting any error messages when the computer restarts?
Right click on "My Computer" (XP) and select manage. A new window will open. Are there any messages with the red 'X" in the applications? Post the information that is in the description.

I have used video wave successfully without a crash or restart. Thank you for that suggestion.
To answer your questions, I have a desktop (Emachines T2042 with enough memory and drive space), I have cleaned the inside recently, and there are no error messages that I am aware of. Below is the information I found with a red "x" under applications.
