Am I correct in my understanding that before the actual burn process begins the pictures, videos, etc are converted to a format, and that is why it takes so long to complete the whole process?
Everything has to convert (encoded) to an
mpg2 format in order for the DVD
to be played in a home DVD player. It is that encoding and not the burning that takes the time. As others asked, what do you have for hardware especially your CPU speed (yes it counts) and your video card/chip information.
Encoding with a fast computer can be as much as a 3:1 ratio and as low as a 1:1 ratio. Slower computer can be much higher. AVCHD takes forever (Creator 2009).
Just in case, remember you can get only one hour of best quality video on a disc; a little less than 2 hours at crappy quality. Double that for DL discs.
Ignore the above if you are just creating a data disc; that is at pretty much the speed of your burner.
