Knowledgebase Article : 000058GN is of no help since I have files - avi and also mkv - that play fine in Windows Media Player but can't be selected to burning to DVD in EMC 9 ... what to do?? I'm using the same DVD blanks in the same DVD burner on the same Dell computer that I have never had a problem with before.

I don't think mkv files are recognized by EMC 9. What kind of avi files are they? DV avi or DivX? EMC 9 should accept the DV avi but may balk at DivX

I had heard that roxio was going to MKV-based stuff ...

But, anyway, how do I find out what kind of avi files they are? The PROPERTIES on them say the bitrate is 128 kbps and they are MPEG Layer-3, 23 frames/second and 919 kbps data rate.

The knowledgebase article seemed to say that if they ran on Windows MP that EMC 9 would accept them.

With AVI files, a lot may depend on what version of EMC 9 you have.

If you have the full retail version then you should be able to deal with any AVI files that you have the proper 'codecs' for, however if you have the cut-down DELL version [9 DE] then you will likely find that your software won't handle AVIs which use the most popular DivX and XivD video codecs, or the most popular AC3 audio codec.

A good way to investigate what 'codecs' your AVI files use is the GSpot Codec Information Appliance which can be downloaded free from here. You run GSpot and drag your AVI file onto the GSpot display screen. It will analyze the AVI, and tell you what codecs were used, and if you have the necessary ones installed.

Roxio may deal with Matroska [MKV] stuff in later versions, but version 9 is getting on for three years old, and I'm pretty sure it won't even look at MKV - neither would your Windows MP if you were using a 3-year-old version.

I am unable to select avi files to create a DVD. They show up with a red X and I'm unable to select them. I've performed the clean install and it did solve that issue but when I created the DVD, it came out with no audio. The movie preview iin mydvd9 had audio, but no audio was the dvd that was created. I thought I might have some missing codes, so I installed the divX codes and I'm back to where I was before by not being able to selct the avi to add them to the project. I saw a tech document about "How to fix both DivX and EMC 9" but I don'thave either file version of the they are referring to in my system32 folder. The only files I have that are simular to them are DivXdecH264.ax, DivXDmux.ax, & DivXSubDec.ax. Any help would be greatly appriciated!!

Most likely you Premier version is a limited version of the full retail EMC 9 and it does not support DivX

So basically my options are upgrade to creator 2009 ($70) OR find some file conversion program (hopefully free) to convert my file to a supported type. Do you know/recommend any ?programs for this?

Any video converter should work well for you. Check to see if it will do the conversion you need.
