Full Version: Tivo Transfer Mac recently broken
Roxio Community > Macintosh Applications > TiVo Transfer, Mac2TiVo, and TiVoToGo
railserv
What doesn't work, Tivo DVR no longer shows up in Tivo Transfer window.

Specs.
MacBook OS X 1.5.7
Tivo Series 2
Tivo Transfer Ver. 1.2.1 (053)

What I've tried. More or less in this order.

PING 10.0.0.15 IP of Tivo reserved in router. Success.

Login to Tivo via web interface. Success.

Download Tivo content via web interface. Success.

Troll forums for tips and suggestions.

Used Java Preferences to set Java Virtual Machine.
Already set to J2SE 5.0 32-bit.
Changed to J2SE 1.4.2 32-bit. Fail.
Changed back to J2SE 5.0 32-bit. Fail.

Used Bonjour Browser to see if Tivo broadcasts itself.
Oddly enough Tivo appears twice in list with same settings.
_tivo-videos._tcp. - 1
Sara's Tivo
10.0.0.15:443
protocol=https
path=/TiVoConnect?Command=QueryContainer&Container=%2FNowPlaying
swversion=9.3.2b-01-2-649
platform=tcd/Series2
TSN=649XXXXXXXXXX
_tivo-videos._tcp. - 1
Sara's Tivo
10.0.0.15:443
protocol=https
path=/TiVoConnect?Command=QueryContainer&Container=%2FNowPlaying
swversion=9.3.2b-01-2-649
platform=tcd/Series2
TSN=649XXXXXXXXXX

Further down Tivo appears with HTTP with similar settings on port 80.

So Tivo is available via Bonjour, twice! Still Fail.

Network Config.
Router (10.0.0.1)<---->Switch<----->Tivo (10.0.0.15) and MacBook (via DHCP).
Same as before.
Power down Tivo. Power down MacBook. Power down Router.
Power up Router. Power up MacBook. Power up Tivo. Fail.

Turned off Firewall in System Preferences, although Tivo Transfer worked before when
added to exceptions list, "accepting all incoming connections." Fail.

Made sure Tivo Desktop was off. Fail.
Even though Tivo Desktop was off the last time Tivo Transfer worked.

Used AppZapper to kill Tivo Transfer plist file.
Checked Tivo website and Tivo itself for MAK number and re-entered it when
restarting Tivo Transfer. Fail.

Also made sure "transfer was allowed" on Tivo website when checking MAK number.

Also dug up version of Tivo Transfer for Popcorn Ver. 1.1.1 (050). Fail.

What has changed since Tivo Transfer last worked.

Upgraded laptop, 120 to 320GB HD and 1GB to 4GB RAM.
Used Carbon Copy Cloner to clone internal drive to replacement drive.
Slid in replacement drive and memory, restart, same environment as before.

Update via Software Update to 10.5.7.

Please advise.

Wow -- you've covered everything of which I can think would cause trouble

You wouldn't happen to have another, different Mac that you could put on the network and install Toast onto it

Just to be sure, and you didn't mention it, is the Mac on the same network subnet? It's IP address should begin with 10.0.0.xxx just like the TiVo

You shouldn't have two exactly the same entries under Bonjour Browser -- You really be seeing that one is under "_tivo-videos" and the other is under "_tivo_videos" -- one has a hyphen as a separator and the other has an underscore (this happens with Series 2 boxes but not Series 3 or TiVo HD boxes)

I've never had to have the TiVo Desktop preference pane turned off for TiVo Transfer to work. In fact -- if you hold down the apple/command key and then click on the preference pane, it will expose the "hidden" videos tab where the Media Access Key is also shown (and you can check it yet again to make sure that it's only digits and has no leading or trailing spaces)

Thanks for your reply Bob, yes Bonjour did discover two versions of the the Tivo,
I just copied and pasted twice, I didn't notice the underscore vs. hyphen distinction.

Plus the Network Configuration has the Mac and Tivo on the same subnet:

Router (10.0.0.1)<---->Switch<----->Tivo (10.0.0.15) and MacBook (via DHCP)

The Switch is because there is only one Ethernet outlet in the room and both the Tivo &
Mac get their IP's from the same router, the Tivo just gets the same IP every time, to
make bookmarking the Now Playing page easier. The Mac usually gets 10.0.0.2-5
handed out via DHCP.

Turned Tivo Desktop Prefs pane back on and activated Video sharing tab. Cool.
Like Mac2Tivo in one place.

And I can now see Videos on my Mac at the bottom of Now Playing, and Photos
and Music in the Music, Photos and Showcases menu. So communication between
Mac and Tivo is happening. And communication between the Tivo and Mac is
happening via https and the web interface.

Restarted Tivo Transfer, but still no Tivo Transfer love for me.

Have other Macs, but I want to beat this one into submission first. Makes no sense,
communication going in both directions, so network is kosher. `Cuz Tivo Transfer is
just version of https working over Port 443 right? Or is it using Port 80?

Thanks for your time and consideration! Any more advice?

So I figgered it out for myself. But first here's some hints at how I got at the problem.

First off, I start Tivo Transfer from either an icon on the Finder toolbar . . .

or a shortcut using QuickSilver. The icon to the right of Tivo Transfer is VisualHub, greatest
video conversion application in the known universe, too bad it has been discontinued. Along
with QuickTime, VLC, MPEG Streamclip and Tivo Decoder Applescript which strips off the
Tivo crap from your recordings to give readable MPEG files.

2nd off when Tivo Transfer first broke and after deleting the plist and reseting the MAK and
download folder, aka the Tivo Recordings listing.

I noticed my Tivo Recordings were gone . . .

But I knew the folder was still there, and my recordings were still there . . . strange.

3rd tip, so I have a buttload of media creation and graphic applications, that's why I got
the larger 320GB drive. I was running out of room for applications, Windows partition,
and all the downloaded Tivo recording, ya get the picture.

I had like just over 300 items in my Applications folder, so when I moved to the new drive,
I tidy them up, using program classification from Version Tracker to build a orderly
subfolder system of my applications. So Toast went into the Rip/Burn/Image folder inside
an Audio/Video folder in the the Applications folder.

So I kept thinking, essentially two things are broken now. Tivo Transfer can't find my Tivo,
a networking problem, I thought. And Tivo Transfer can't find my Tivo Recordings either.
I dunno what's up with that.

No network problems, Tivo Desktop going and a blowing, Tivo web interface via https going
and blowing, so what's up with that?

Hmm, Java Virtual Machine?

BING, blinding insight . . . not the Microsoft search engine. Which doesn't suck, too much.

Java Virtual Machine, shared code base among multi-platforms. Some Mac applications are
also written to run on Windows, Linux, etc. And to make it easier to maintain the code the
programmers will write the program in some cross-platform language like Java and then just
stick-on interfacey bits for the respective platform.

So on the Mac, some cross-platform applications break when you take them out of the
Applications folder, or in the case of Tivo Transfer, out of the folder (Toast 10 Titanium)
which is supposed to be in the Applications folder.

So when my Tivo Recordings listing disappeared, it was a tip that maybe it was a PATH
problem, whereby the application couldn't find system resources to operate properly. Most
applications put in the wrong folder or too deep in a folder hierarchy just won't run. Tivo
Transfer ran, but broke functionality, much harder to diagnosis coming on the heels of a
System upgrade from 10.5.6 to 10.5.7. I though something in the upgrade broken the
application.

Since I was using a shortcut and not digging down into the folder hierarchy every time to
start Tivo Transfer, it didn't occur to me that moving it could cause a problem. So the
solution was to put Tivo Transfer into the root level of the Applications folder:

Applications>Tivo Transfer.app

Instead of where I had moved it (from a Terminal pwd listing):

/Applications/Audio:Video/Rip:Burn:Image/Toast 10 Titanium/TiVo Transfer.app

Thanks again for all those kind souls that read my posting to try to help and for Tech
Support, add this to your troubleshooting decision tree:

Is Tivo Transfer inside the Toast folder inside the Applications folder?

Or did you move Tivo Transfer or the Toast folder inside the Applications folder?

If so, move Tivo Transfer or the Toast folder to the Applications folder.
(Hopefully Tech Support is reading this.)

Cheers!

Glad it worked out

Note that the "videos" tab thing in the TiVo Desktop preference pane only works for .tivo and MPEG-2 files. Mac2TiVo works with far more different types of files

I am experiencing a similar issue to railserv. I am no longer able to see my DVRs in Tivo Transfer. I was able to see them previously and transfer movies to my PowerMac G5 up until yesterday when my router died (during a transfer of a movie). I suspect that the issue is network related but am unable to resolve.

I put in the new router and restarted all network devices and have confirmed that both the Tivo and Mac are on the same subnet.

I can start photo/music sharing in Preferences > Tivo Desktop and see them on my Tivo. But cannot see the Tivos listed in the Tivo Transfer software.

I have zapped and re-installed the Tivo Transfer software.

All software is installed in the default locations Applications > Toast > Tivo Tranfer

The Roxio site help file says (Item 6) Make sure your network is set up correctly. Click here for more details. but when you click on the link it is dead Safari can’t open the page “http://tivosupport2.instancy.com/LaunchContent.aspx?CID=06e5b85d-6e3b-4b77-ac4d-75a0d6460ec0” because Safari can’t connect to the server “tivosupport2.instancy.com”

I have resolved the issue. Thanks to another posting, I discovered that on some Linksys routers, there's an option to enable or disable multicast packets (I think it's in a security area) -- but the option in the firmware is backward -- in that enabling it is really turning it off and vice versa. It was pretty obvious that the issue was related to the new router I bought. Thanks to user bedelman for providing the info.
