As a complete beginner (but, I hope a quick learner) I would appreciate some tips on how to remove scenes from within a short piece of video. I'm using Creator 2009 for the first time. Many thanks for your time.

There are a bunch of user developed videos that may help Watch these and these. They are for earlier versions but the operation is the same (only the names have been changed !) This one is specific for your question.
Add your video to Video Wave, in timeline, move the cursor to where you want to make the first cut and click the double headed arrow. That will cut the video at that point. Make sure that the video track is selected -- has a dotted line around it. Select the section after the cut and again go to the place where you want the cut inserted. Select the section between the two cuts -- remember the dotted lines --and select the X. That center section will be deleted and the two on either side will close up. They will still be separate sections as shown by Story Line (you can add a transition if you like) but will play one after another.
