I have had no problem burning videos up to 98 minutes long, but I have tried unsuccessfully to burn a movie that is 91 minutes long (sent directly to Toast after copying). Instead of a burning progress bar opening up after I click Record, I get a multiplexing window. Then the message that I need 4.7GB and only have 4.35 available! I understand that all 4.7GB discs end up with less than that because the program formats them - and that was surely true for all my other successful burns.

I thought Toast compressed the file to fit a standard DVD.

Why is Toast going through a multiplexing step that blocks the burning process?

Choose Save as Disc Image. When that is done select the disc image using the Image File setting in the Copy window. Toast then will do the additional compression to fit the single-layer disc. That is, if Toast 9 Basic includes that capability. Alternatively you could go to the custom encoder settings window and choose Always re-encode. In that case Toast will re-encode the MPEG 2 video instead of multiplexing it. But this is a lesser=quality and more time-consuming method than the first option I described.

I tried the custom encoder settings window and chose Always re-encode. The size of the file dropped to 2.7GB. But Toast still multiplexed and gave me the same message: Not enough room on this disc; 4.7GB required!

Why this would happen to one movie and not another is beyond me.

Roxio wants another $79 for 10 Titanium! (and I understand that is primarily for BluRay)

I just checked a copy of Toast 9 Basic. It appears to me you can choose Save as Disc Image and then use the Image File setting in the Copy window to apply the Fit-to-DVD compression when burning the disc image to the single-layer DVD. That's the way to do it.
