Full Version: Goback version 3 causing HP to not boot

I know this is the last version before symantec unfortunately bought goback. I have used version 3 on XP home and Pro on a dell and 2 pcs I built. But this HP will not boot with it installed! It has Media Center and the ever frustrating recovery partition HP is infamous for since it is pretty much worthless. It tries to boot, flashes a blue screen (instantly gone) and then tries to reboot again. I checked event viewer and saw nothing that screamed 'here i am'. I did a system restore and tried to reinstall just in case - same issues.
Any ideas? I like this version, do not care for symantec anything and would like to make it work since I already have the software. I wonder if it has something to do woth HPs built-in recovery manager. Can find nothing on HP site.
Thanks!

An almost 8-year old utility software? I don't think there is Roxio support for this software at this time. sad.gif

Keep hitting F8 as you start, and you should eventually come to a screen which invites you to [among other things] disable the automatic restart of Windows.

With auto restart disabled, your computer should halt while showing you a blue screen with a "Stop error" displayed. It will be in the general format:
STOP: 0x0000007E (0xC0000005, 0x804E518E, 0xFC938104, 0xFC937E04)
SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED

That Stop Error tells you what the problem is.

Can you give us a bit more information too? Such as, was this a working machine, and after you installed GoBack, this problem started? Was it set up as a multi-boot machine? Did it ever boot with GoBack installed?

When you say "it tries to boot", what's on the screen at that point? The first thing that should come up (after the POST info) would be the GoBack screen, giving you 4 seconds to hit the space-bar to start a recovery session. Do you get that? Do you get past that to a Windows logo?

Do you have a bootable CD you use? If so, can you see anything when you try to look at your HD? If GoBack got properly installed, it should show as an unrecognized drive since it changes the drive identifier.

I run GoBack too, with XP Pro, and haven't seen a problem like your describing. If anything, it sounds like a bad install. Oh, one other possibility I can think of, does your system have a hardware virus checker as part of the BIOS? If so, disable it. GoBack changes the Master Boot Record, which the BIOS may detect as a virus, and if it tries to revert the MBR, that'll cause a problem.

Let us know!
