My brand new ACER netbook only has a 1024x600 (32 bit) display.

When i try to open EMC 7 I get "The display settings have changed such they do not meet the minimum requirements for this applicaltion. Please change the screen resolution to 1024 x 768 pixxels or more and the color quality to 16 bit or higher."

Is there something I can do? I'm not very good on computers, so please speak slowly

Unfortunately, No. All the video applications require a min of 1024x768. However, you would still be able to use some non-video applications fine when run individually.

You could try resizing in Windows itself

Right click on an empty screen, go to properties, settings tab and move the slider over to the right

However, you say you have a 'new' computer so you should be aware that EMC 7 (or 7.5) won't work correctly with Vista (or even XP if IE7 or WMP 10 are installed)
