My Mom had a virus on her computer and was told to wipe the drive and re-install everything because the virus programs were not finding it. I decided to use Roxio backup my PC on DVD's. I thought I made sure that I did it properly I clicked all the folders I needed to back-up ... Ie my Music. In that case all of the sub folders were backed up perfectly fine. BUT the vital documents she had saved under her Documents folder NONE of the sub-folders were backed up! I thought they were I even checked to be sure it was all there. But now the drive is wiped and restored. I am so upset I dont know what to do.

Why would it save all of the music sub-folders and not the sub-folders in "Documents" ???

I found programs that say they can recover MS word documents but I cant afford them.

When I first tried to access the DVD it kept saying the drive was Busy ... and when I do access it everything was saved except for the iportant documents. Is there anything that I can do?

Now her hard drive has to be replaced. The computer is giving an error saying this. I am begging to hate computers.

Any help would be appreciated.

Try to read them in another drive if possible.

I suspect that you got a warning message about file names when burning and proceeded with the burn anyway.

The recovery program may be the only recourse but it will only work if the files are actually on the disc! What I said above about the warning message might indicate that they were never actually written.

I just purchased roxio 8. Did a backup, checked to make sure it was correct and later learned (as you did) that all sub directories were not copied. Fortunately, I did not lose any information. Did you discover the problem?

I assume you are talking about Roxio Backup and I do not see any way around this. You need to use UDF, No Bridge and I don't see anywhere to set that within Backup…

BUMP on the other hand uses a different system so it is not affected by the long file names or pathnames.

The only other alternative would be to write the backup to HD then use Classic to burn that file to disc. In Classic you can set the file system in the Project Properties.
Edit: After reading the pinned post at the top, I tried Roxio Backup on a large directory structure consisting of 10 sub-directories and all containing file names of 74 characters…

While I did receive the warning, the CD was written in UDF and all directories and files were intact!
