Discussion Vhs Copy Protection Issues

Any help/discussion from Jon and Ivan on this?

Have any of you encountered Macrovision protection on a VHS tape and it wouldn't copy using Roxio USB Capture device? I have bought beer flats full of VHS tapes to test at auction and have no problem copying any of them.

Macrovision protection was a electronic signal placed on the VHS tape in 1985 and legislation was passed that VCR machines had to have Automatic Gain Control mechanisms. That prevented VHS to VHS copying and when DVD Recorders were invented a flag popped up trying to copy VHS to DVD when a Macrovision signal was detected.

So my question is how could I or posters break any DRM/Macrovision protection using this product/procedure? Or other capture devices (AVerMedia, Hauppauge, ATI TV Wonder) that allow copying VHS Tape with Macrovision protection.

If it works and I'm not circumventing any protection why not tell posters it works rather than drum all the DRM crap at them?

The Death Of The Phantom Deleter :ninja:

Gurus,

Thinking back on the history of the Phantom Deleter , it seems it's caused a lot of ire in the past and has made it's way to the present. I'm going to address what I have heard and remember from these discussion.

1) It seems to have cropped up when David de Roxio was managing. David did his best to manage the forums, and as is by Sonic training (baptism by fire) there were some etiquette gaps on his part. He should have been more transparent in his management, which may have included randomly deleting posts that he felt weren't appropriate. There were a couple times he came to me and asked my opinion, I gave him options and suggested he use his best judgment, which was a mistake. I should have also instructed him to give clarity of his actions. Since he was learning and didn't stay long before the company laid him off, he never had a chance to correct or level out some of his past actions like I do if I make mistake.

Since nobody knew David may have been the Phantom Deleter , this could have led to clandestine retaliation from other Guru's mysteriously deleting other posts not knowing it was probably David and so the myth became an unintentional reality.

2) We can now investigate "phantom deleters" . You knows this now and whether these things happen out of spite or accident, we can research it and get an answer.

3) We have little proof of past accusations and/or defenses and really don't think it's worth digging through posts from years ago to find out for vindication on either side - especially since it was David who unintentionally started all of this.

4) What compounds all of this is the written word. Even though I write public content for a living, I still find that writing on a personal level, my words can be innocently misinterpreted in awkward or stressful situations. I think that happens a lot here and not being able to talk on the phone or in person exacerbates a lot of this drama. The best way to resolve this is to just PM the person directly and ask for clarification. It's far less offensive/defensive than trying to "out" them in front of the other Guru's. Of course, if things get bad, you can always bring me in.

So let's put this to rest and start over. Grudgingly shake each others hands and move on. You're all very valuable active members in this community and think these little things really don't help each other or the people you volunteer your time to help.

You're welcome to discuss and ask questions, as always (except that last thread. It was getting ridicuous ).

Either Easy Cd Creator 6 Or Photosuite 5 Causes Total Failure In Xp

VISTA. I meant VISTA. Unfortunately I can't edit the title of the post. But I meant to say Either Easy Cd Creator 6 Or Photosuite 5 Causes Total Failure In Vista.

Well, I got some software that originally came with a microadvantage 4x DVD burner bought in December 2003, which included some stuff from Roxio, and it was just fine and dandy on windows XP, but SOMETHING here is causing an EPIC CATASTROPHIC FAILURE in windows vista basic service pack 1 and I was hoping someone would tell me what. See the attached picture file?: THIS is what happens EVERY TIME the computer boots up after ONE of these software packages is installed on vista. It shows this BSOD screen for a tiny, tiny fraction of a second and then reboots automatically again and again and again. No error checking, no system recovery can fix it. When this BSOD event occurs as a result of installing this software, it's a choice between restoring from an available restore point, or do-not-pass-go do-not-collect-200-dollars go-directly-to-reformatting-the-hard-drive-and-reinstalling-windows. I had to REINSTALL EVERYTHING because of this blue screen event the first time, which I attributed to a bad windows update rubbing the wrong way with the operating system since it didn't install perfectly the first time (the installation of the whole compaq package was left on a screen and I had to kill some processes, and some things that should have been installed were not), but no. The second time, everything installed correctly, and I let it do 3 years worth of updates and it was fine with that. Then I proceeded to install my favorite programs before the plan to move everything from my external hard drive back to the main master hard drive. And then I got this blue screen of death again! So it WASN'T the updates, it was one of my old favorite programs.

FORTUNATELY, this time, unlike the first time, after MOST of the software installations, vista automatically created a "system restore point" (that must be one of the functionalities that was defective from the first windows vista installation which did not go correctly). I picked a recent one and PRESTO. NO blue screen of death, and EVERYTHING was installed except for TWO THINGS. Roxio easy cd and dvd creator 6 and roxio photosuite 5 (and one other thing after them that I knew was not the problem which I promptly deleted from program files and then reinstalled and it was fine after that).

So there you have it. ONE OF THEM causes this blue screen of death. No, I would RATHER not play system-restore-point-Russian-roulette (especially since I MANUALLY created system restore points and when I got the BSOD I started trying to use them and they did not WORK - they said they couldn't be used because there were errors on the hard drive and it had to check the drive for errors - which it did and then said the same thing about not working - but the automatically generated restore points worked), if I can just get someone to tell me WHICH of these products is the cause. Maybe it's both. They're both Roxio, after all. It's one of the two, or it's both. If it's one of the two, I would like to know which one will NOT cause the BSOD, so that I can install it because I liked this programs on XP and want to install one of them if possible. AT LEAST ONE of them is UNDOUBTEDLY the culprit. And Windows Vista DID give me a warning about "compatibility" issues with this version of the program after each one. But it also said the same thing about Nero burning rom 6 and powerdvd and at least one other thing I installed, and THEY were not problems at all.

So which is it? Does Roxio easy creator 6 cause epic catastrophic failure in windows vista, does roxio photosuite 5, or do they both? I'm going to be REALLY ticked if I am told one or the other is safe and then I see the BSOD again, by the way.

What do you mean by a different type of video? You would have to explain exactly what you did before anyone can comment on that.

Burn speed is not much of a factor in creating a video DVD. Most of the time required is the encoding to DVD compliant video (if you are creating a proper video DVD and not just a data DVD containing video files)

Playback Controls Wont Work In Mydvd

I was putting the finishing touches to a MyDVD project when I found the playback controls in the editing window wouldn't work anymoer - that is:

Pause, frame advance forward, play, go to clip start, go to clip end, go to start of project and go to end of project, etc.

None of the icons work - they are all greyed out. Cut, copy and paste etc will not work when right clicking a clip.

The shuttle ring also does not work. I can drag the seek bar across the timeline but the video will not play as the slider is dragged.

Curiously, if I double click a clip, the clip editing window will open, and I can play back the video in the editing window.

Other projects already on my PC seem to open and work without any problems.

So I figure it is one of two things.

1. The dmsd file has become corrupt (hope to hell that is not the case, but fear it is).
2. I have accidentally hit some control or other and switched off some of the functionality of the editing window. (praying that is what has happened).

Any comments on how I could fix this would be greatly appreciated.
