Having just burned my first audio CD in disk creator, and under options chosen the 'conversion to mp3' for the WMA files ripped by Windows Media Creator 10, I wish to see if the files on the CD can be played on a CD player that recognises mp3 but not wma.
A look at 'properties' only tells me that they are audio files. Is there way to confirm that conversion has taken place.

Use windows explorer to look at the cd. You should see a bunch of .mp3 files on the disc.

When you made the disc did you make an Audio cd or an MP3/WMA disc.If you made an Audio cd then all you will see is a bunch of 1Kb .cda files.

If you made an MP3/WMA disc then as Larry says you should see .mp3 files on the disc. Then you'd be able to see if there were any .wma files or not.

I made an audio CD. The next project category is 'jukebox disc' and maybe that would be more appropriate for my purpose. Thanks for the reply.

That explains why you don't see any mp3 files. You made a standard Audio cd.
You could use the "jukebox" function. My advice would be to use Music Disc Creator instead.Go to Start,All Programs,Roxio EMC 8,Audio and choose it.
Once you have it open choose MP3/WMA for the project type. Then hit Add Tracks to add files. To get the WMA's to convert hit "File,Project settings" and check where it says "Convert all to" and choose mp3.

Sorry to be persistent, but the music disc creator offers three modes - Audio CD, MP3/WMA disc and DVD Music Disc. the second option comes up with DVD and I see no way to change it to CD. The book I have on the programme clearly says that CDs can be burned in that option.
Can you tell me a way to change to a CD?

If you click on the drop down box next to Disc Size, and you can't select CD, then there is something wrong with your install.  You could try a Repair through Add/Remove Programs.
