I just replaced my G4 with a 20" iMac Core 2 Duo and let Migration Assistant transfer my applications and files. Toast 7.1 came over OK and seems to do everything that I've asked of it. However, it only lets me burn DVD's at 2X. The CD's burn at 24x. It used to offer to burn DVD's at 16X on the Pioneer DVR-10 in my G4.

I saw the earlier post about 7.0.2 that suggested that 7.1 would fix the problem. Do I need to uninstall and re-install Toast? If so, do I need to start with the original 7.0 disk and then update to 7.1 with the downloadable pkg?

Toast 7.1, OS 10.4.8 (true for 10.4.7 as well), Matshita UJ-846.

The drive tells Toast what speeds it will burn on specific media. It won't help to re-install Toast, although you could trash the Toast plist files in your User Library Preferences folder. Try a different brand of media to see if that is the issue. There might be a problem with the drive.
I'm just a fellow Toast-user so please don't blame Roxio for any misguidance I may provide. And do let me know if your issue gets solved. Cheers from Eugene, Oregon!

The best you'll get is 8x. Check here.

Thanks - I only expected to get 8x. I only realy got 4x on the Pioneer because of buffer underruns - the G4 just didn't have the horsepower.

Just to close it out. I haven't had a media problem in years - since I've always bought brand name premium discs. Until Now. After trashing the plist and re-setting the preferences, I finally got it to burn at 8x (closer to 10x really) using the Apple brand DVD-R 8x disks. That's the only ones that I found to work so far (at $4/each). I'll search some Mac hardware groups and see if anybody's found some cheaper ones that work at 8x.

Just a postscript from my post in another thread.

OK gang, this problem has been around for over a year, it's a hardware issue, and Apple knows about it. The solution is simple, but not even Apple (via their so-called Genius Bar) seems to know it. You can get Verbatim "Digital Movie" DVD-R's at Best Buy for $17/25 that Toast will burn at 8x. In my opinion $.68 is a great price, considering you're actually getting great quality media.

The drive used in the recent iMac's and laptops are very picky about the quality of the media. This is not a conspiracy by Apple to sell blank disks even though Apple branded DVD-R's ($35/25) will burn at 8x. There are solid technical reasons why the good Verbatim disks will work as well as the Apple disks - they're made by the same people, at least the ones sold in the US. See http://www.digitalfa...ia/dvdmedia.htm for the details. The bottom line is Mitsubishi makes the best blank DVD's right now. Apple buys their present supply from Mitsubishi and all of the Verbatim disks sold in the US are made by Mitsubishi. The other brands could be made by any of a number of different manufacturers, some great - some lousy.

BTW, I've seen this question so often this year in various forums and forms, that I think that this should be in the Toast FAQ.
