Hi -
While BackupMyPC sees my external USB hard drive, the drive does not appear in the pulldown list of destinations for the backup.
I see that I can save the backup as a file and then move it to the external drive, but surely BackupMyPC should save the backup directly to my external USB drive.....
Also, I'm unable to find a Backup MyPC manual on the CD or Roxio site. Does it exist or should I give up on that dream?

How are you defining your backup. Creating a backup job thru the backup button or thru the backup wizard.
If creating a job thru the backup button, after you click on file in the drop down, right below it will open a drop down for the file name and where you want to create it. Just point there to your external drive. Also I suggest changing the name each time, or it will overwrite the previous backup.
If using the wizard, after selecting file it will again open a drop down for the file name and you can browse to your external drive.
If you are doing a disaster recovery, the only option is to CD/DVD or tape.
As far as a manual, about all you will get is part of the EMC 8 manual, which you can download here.

So, a manual backup of a drive or set of folders should go to your USB drive just fine, but not a Disaster Recovery set.
Hope that helps!
