Hi -
While BackupMyPC sees my external USB hard drive, the drive does not appear in the pulldown list of destinations for the backup.
I see that I can save the backup as a file and then move it to the external drive, but surely BackupMyPC should save the backup directly to my external USB drive.....
Also, I'm unable to find a Backup MyPC manual on the CD or Roxio site. Does it exist or should I give up on that dream?

How are you defining your backup. Creating a backup job thru the backup button or thru the backup wizard.
If creating a job thru the backup button, after you click on file in the drop down, right below it will open a drop down for the file name and where you want to create it. Just point there to your external drive. Also I suggest changing the name each time, or it will overwrite the previous backup.
If using the wizard, after selecting file it will again open a drop down for the file name and you can browse to your external drive.
If you are doing a disaster recovery, the only option is to CD/DVD or tape.
As far as a manual, about all you will get is part of the EMC 8 manual, which you can download here.

I can select an external USB drive for a backup without any problem. But not for a Disaster Recovery set. The disaster recovery set is assuming that you're starting with a blank drive, a set of diskettes, and however many optical discs were created as part of the Disaster Recovery set. Because DOS and the bootable Windows diskettes don't have any USB drivers, it won't let you save to a USB drive.
So, a manual backup of a drive or set of folders should go to your USB drive just fine, but not a Disaster Recovery set.
Hope that helps!
