After my laptop resumes from STANDBY and I click on My Computer, Explorer just hangs ("Not Responding") - until I put a disc in my USB DVD drive (NEC ND-3500ag), at which time everything continues normally. If I invoke Explorer via a shortcut to some specific folder, it's OK, but that particular DVD drive is not accessible.

If I disable Drag-to-Disc for the drive, the problem disappears, as it does if I simply remove DRVMCDB and DLACDBHM from the LOWERFILTERS Registry entry (I suppose this is more-or-less the same as disabling Drag-to Disc :) ).

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Two packet writing softwares on the same computer will cause problems.  Your best bet is to remove them all, including D2D.  Using them to save any important data is risky, at best.

Use Creator Classic.  It won't take control of your computer once you wake it up from its slumber.  (Also something that I would never use.)

Thanks for your reply.

I don't have two packet writing applications - just Drag-to-Disc. Sure, I could remove this software, but I do find it convenient to be able to drag-and-drop, delete, erase/format from Explorer, etc. Much faster than going into Creator Classic just to put one file on a disc.

By the way, since there is a right-click option to "Disable Drag-to-Disc for this drive", I wonder how one re-enables it. I haven't been able to find a way, and it appears to be undocumented. In fact, disabling it for one drive disables it for all, and D-to-D no longer sees the drives and hence cannot manipulate them.

It will restart if needed, or if you reboot or you can force it by going through Start – All Programs – Roxio~~~ Drag-to-Disc.

Yes, restarting D-to-D could be done from the EMC9 menu, so that was not a problem. I don't really feel like going through the entire messy process again, but if I remember correctly, once I disabled D-to-D for the drive(s), the following transpired:

1. The drives came up with the yellow ! in Device Manager
2. Even after rebooting, D-to-D said something like "No Drives", and I found no way to make D-to-D see any.

Never mind, this is not a big issue, as I wouldn't really want to disable D-to-D, especially since it appears one can't do it for only a specific drive. I tried this only in my attempts to solve the original problem I describe in my first post, which I still would like to solve.

I just reread my original post and I see that it may be a bit misleading. I should clarify that my statement "If I invoke Explorer via a shortcut to some specific folder, it's OK, but that particular DVD drive is not accessible" applies only before I put media in the drive. Once I do, all is normal.

Thanks.

Of course it isn't going to be able to access the drive, if there is no media in it.

To try to get the yellow exclamation marks in Device Manager, right click on each of the drives with the exclamation marks, and delete them.  Then reboot your computer, and check to make sure they show up without the exclamation marks by them.  If they still have them, then you have some problems with those drives.

This, of course, is completely untrue. I can left-click on an empty drive, in which case I get a mesage that says "Please insert a disk into drive X". Also, one would be able to right-click on an empty drive and select any relevant options. And, even more importantly, you don't expect Explorer to hang on My Computer just because you happen to have an empty drive, do you?

Quite apart from the fact that you can't "delete" anything from Device Manager (though you can certainly Uninstall), I mentioned the yellow ! as a symptom, not as a problem. Again, this was just a by-product of my attempts to solve the real problem.

Semantics!  Did you uninstall the drives from Device Manager, or you too hung up on semantics to use your head?

:) I agree that "Uninstall" vs "delete" is semantics, but saying that an empty drive can't be accessed is certainly not.

I'm not sure why you're asking about this particular item. If it is in an effort to fix my yellow exclamation marks, then I tried to point out that this situation no longer exists, as it occurred only as a result of my disabling D-to-D. Once I got that going again, in conjunction with an uninstall of the drives (yes, I did it) everything was back to "normal", except, as I said, Exlorer hangs on My Computer if there is no media in the USB drive (the other is ATAPI, and has no problems), but only immediately after resuming from Standby. Once I put a disk in the drive, I have no problems until I go into Standby and resume again.

It would be nice to know if anybody else using a USB DVD drive with Drag-to-Disk has this problem. To test, make sure your drive has no media in it and Drag-to-Disc IS NOT RUNNING, put the machine into Standby, then wake it up, then click on My Computer and see whether it hangs or works correctly. If it hangs, put a disk in the drive - that should clear things up (it does for me).

EDIT: I just realized that my description of the problem neglected to mention that I don't normally have D-to-D active, and the problem, as described, is what happens when such is the case. In fact, if D-to-D IS active the problem does not occur, and Explorer/My Computer does what it should. However, if I right-click on an empty drive then we are back in the same place, and Explorer stops responding. I'm not sure which is worse... I've changed the preceeding paragraph accordingly.

Thanks for the efforts.
