Help installing EMC9 on laptop

I have a toshiba mx40 laptop and have been trying to install EMC9 all weekend. I downloaded the software from this website which was not a problem however, when I am installing the software....it just hangs on me. I have left it for hours and the progress bar just does not move. No error message...nothing. I have tried a repair but it tells me that I need to complete the install first.
I have monitored the progress of the install through task manager and It seems to stop after the sightspeed process which appears to be around 3/4 of the way through the installation.
I have EMC7.5 already and I tried the install of EMC9 with and without this installed. I have also got rid of sonic dvd and cleaned the registry as best I can.
I am now concerned that I will not be able to run the install even from the backup disks which should come in a couple of weeks.
Can anyone shed any light to why it will not progress further and install properly?
Thanks.

How much defragged and free space do you have on your hard drive? Make sure that your anti-virus is turned off. In fact, make sure everything you don't need is shut down. You do not have to go to extremes but the less interference the better. Do you have any other packet writing programs on your computer? You indicated that you removed a lot but if that computer is relatively new, it may have come with a lot of junk. If you have IE7, that will interfere later in running the program so roll that back to IE6. Also make sure you have updated your drivers for the video chip; that will also be needed to run the program properly. I could not find just the Toshiba MX 40 on their web site so I can't point you in the right direction. What is the full designation of that portable?
Toshiba likes to put B's Clips on the computer; that is a packet writing program.

Its a Toshiba Equium M40X-149 C-M 370/XP HE/...
Key Features
- Intel® Celeron® M processor 370
- Windows® XP Home Edition SP2
- 40 GB Hard Disk Drive
- 1G DDR RAM
- 15.4" WXGA TFT display
- DVD-Supermulti
I have about 11 gig internal space left and an external HDD 250G which has plenty of space. Both drives have been defraged recently.
I am not sure if my direct x is the august update, I will check. It is V9 though.
Its about 2 years old. IE6 though using firefox.
I have tried the install with most things closed down. I have norton antivirus still running so I shall try an install with this disabled.
What I have experienced is plenty of CPU activity (with msi programs using up most) for the majority of the installation. It then gets to a part for the sightspeed process 3/4 of way through progress bar. This runs for a minute then the system idle process shows 97 or 98% idle. Like I said, I have left this running for a few hours without loading anything else to see if it would kick back in but alas....nothing.
When I finally give up and click on cancel installation it does not close, so I then ended the setup and install running in task manager to try again. I am unable to run the program again to repair as it complains that the installation is still in progress.
I do not have any shortcuts on the desktop but in my programs I do have a folder for Roxio 9 with the components in. When I select these I get a fatal error message and it tells me to run install again.
I then have cleanly shut down PC. Reloaded and attempted again. It gets to the language selection, the setup box appears and it uninstalls the previous installation attempt (I.E the folder disappears from my programs) and then gives me the option to run installation again. This again hangs with no error message to report.
I will update directx tonight and will close everything not needed to run norton etc and retry. Is there anything else I can attempt? Excuse my ignorance but what is a packet writing program?

Still can't find that laptop/desktop at Toshiba. Equiium is a desktop model but you said you had a laptop. Are you in the US ? If not, that could explain why I can't find it on their web site.
A packet writing program is one where you format a CD before you drag files to it for copying. There are many and none are very reliable for long term storage. Some examples are: Drag-2Disc (Roxio) , InCD (Nero) and B's Clips (independent but come on Toshiba products.)
Did you order the back up disc? You might try re-downloading that file again but remember you have a limited number of downloads.
You may have some problems running this program on that Celeron processor.

Its defo a laptop..
type : Intel® Celeron® M processor 370
clock speed : 1.5 GHz
Front Side Bus : 400 MHz
2nd level cache : 1 MB
I have ordered the backup disk and I have downloaded the files twice now. Once using firefox, once using IE6.
I have got Pinnicle Studio V9 installed and Nero 7 so I do go into overkill with DVD editing software.
I found that EMC 7.5 ran really well on my lappy, Studio struggles from time to time but I get results from it. It does have a habit of crashing but Studio is notorious for this.
I will mainly use EMC9 for making my own DVD slideshow and videos. Downloading things onto my PSP and pocket PC. I can use other programs for video capture so if it struggles with that I am not too bothered.
Really, I was looking to use it to replace nero and studio and EMC 7.5 as I found myself picking bits from each application to get a finished article.

Last night I attempted the install again. This time I did what was suggested by you helpful people.
My directx software was not upto date so I updated it.
Then I switched antivirus off and closed anything I did not need to run..... Tried install and it hung at the same point.
I then created another user account with admin rights and attempted it again. This time it sailed through the install. It appears that my previous attempts were failing just before it copies the Roxio shortcut to the desktop.
I did not get chance to run the program as it was late and I needed to get up early this morning....so I will test it tonight. Hopefully, I can run the program ok.
