I have just bought a new Sony handycam and EMC9 but my camcorder is not recognised. I have plugged in the USB cable which came with the recorder. Do I need any thing else and if so, what?

If the camcorder has a firewire port and your computer has a firewire port, get a Sony brand firewire cable, and capture your video as an .avi file.

Which model handycam? With most models, the USB cable is used to transfer still images or hook up the camcorder as a 'webcam'.  Media Import usually doesn't support camcorders in this mode. Let us know which model.  MiniDV, MiniDVD or a hard drive model.  Each has it own way of transferring the best quality video.
Phenom X4 965 3.4Ghz, 4gig DDR3, LG 47" 3D TV, Hitachi 1TB HD, Seagate 500GB, LiteOn iHBS112 Bluray, TSSTCorp SH-222A DVD, ATI HD3300 IGP, VIA HiDef audio with Logitech Z5500 THX certified 5.1 speakers, Epson 4490 scanner, Canon 9000Pro MarkII printer, Sharp AL1551CS laser printer/copier, Sony TRV740 8mm digital, Canon HV20 HDV camcorder and Fuji S7000 for still photos, Win7 Home Premium
---------
System 2: HP DV7 laptop, Turion II Dual Core 2.4Ghz, 4GB RAM, 640GB hard drive, ATI Mobility HD4650, ATI HiDef Audio, Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit.

Have you tried either of:
1. Transferring the files to your harddisk and capturing from the hard-disk first
2. Finalizing the DVD in camcorder, removing from camcorder, putting into computer DVD drive and capturing from the DVD in the computer (assuming its a DVD camcorder).

Gary, I saw your response on this problem. We have a JVC Everio HD cam, what do I need to do so that it will recognize my camera?

You don't need Media Import at all.  The JVC connects to the computer via USB 2 cable.  As far as Windows is concerned, it's just another external hard drive.  Open My Computer. Plug in the JVC and turn it on to the 'VCR' or playback mode. You should see another drive letter pop up (like Local Drive (E:)).  Just copy the files from the JVC to My Documents/My Videos and rename the extension to .MPG.  You should then be able to use them in Videowave/MyDVD.

My daughter has one and I had no trouble with a file that she emailed me.

Just copy the files from the JVC to My Documents/My Videos and rename the extension to .MPG.

Make sure you change the Windows settings to show the real extension of .MOD.
