i need help here. I was very happy with my powerbook G4 and the internal dvd superdrive and that is until i downloaded Mac OS 10.4.8 update.
Before i was running OS 10.4.3 and was able to burn cd's and dvd's no problem at all using toast 6. But since the install, my nightmare begun, i just cant write on a cd, the powermac keep spitting out the blank cd each time i hit the record button. I can still read but that's it, has anyone experienced this nightmare?
I need help.
Kind regards
Naz

I am having EXACTLY the same problem since I upgraded to OS 10.4.8 too. When I try to put a dvd to burn from in my powerbook onto my external burner, it spits it out. Grrr. The only thing I've been able to determine is that my computer now only accepts dvd-r whereas before the upgrade it accepted dvd+R dvds too. What's with that?
I need help too.

There are times when doing incremental system updates (such as from 10.4.7 to 10.4.8) can result in odd problems. The usual fix is to download and apply to current combined system update on top of the existing system. This may not fix your problem, but it does no harm to find out if it does.

Hi Tsantee,
thanx for your reply. Excuse my ignorance but how do you go about downloading and applying to current combined system update on top of the existing system. what I have done so far is reinstalling system software all over again but to 10.4.7 only & problem is still there. I'm willing to try your suggestion if you can let me know how to do that.

It's discouraging that the problem still exists after reinstalling the system software. That suggests a drive or media problem, although I can't rule out a problem with Toast either. What keeps me thinking that the burn was okay is that the disc plays in a standalone player. Are you using Toast 6.1.1?
The 10.4.8 combined system update can be applied on any version of 10.4.x including an incremental update to 10.4.8. I've used the combined update in the past to fix some USB problems I was having. The MacFixit site frequently suggests trying the combined updater to deal with odd problems. Here is Apple page where you can download it: 10.4.8 combined update for PPC Macs

Don't know where to "stick" this question rather than opening a new thread..others have reported error code = -50 which curiously enough states "Toast couldn't complete the last command because of a Mac OS Error"
but nobody actually posted what the -50 error means? Are there any other words associated with this?
I went through a lengthy session with Apple Support on an unrelated USB keyboard issue a week ago, throwing preference files away and disabling apps in the start up. After that, I fsck'd the system and fixed permissions only to find that now I can't burn DVDs or CDs with either Toast 6 or the Apple "burn" actions like iDVD. I have recently (incrementally) upgraded to 10.4.8 and tried different media as well. I have also recently reconnected EyeTV but I'm not trying to burn anything from there, just simple video files/projects I created in iDVD. Neither iTunes, iPhoto or dragging files to the Toast window works.
Thanks
