It really sucks and drives me nuts when this Cyclic Redundancy Errors occur when I try to copy some data from my CD\DVD.

Is there any way to recover data from the CD\DVD which displays such error message.

Is there any way to overcome this problem.

What are the precautions that we need to take while burning a CD\DVD so that we dont encounter this problem again.I invite all you guys to post your views and suggestions to help us do better in this issue. This can be helpful to everyone.

A CRC error basically means that your drive is having trouble reading the disc, and in this case, those errors are unrecoverable.  That is, the bits it can't read are numerous enough that even with the error correction bits it can't reliably figure out what it's reading.

We don't know if you're trying to read your discs on the same drive that wrote them, or a different drive.  But there are two places problems can occur, during the writing, and during the reading.

Make sure you have the latest firmware loaded for your CD/DVD writer.  You'll find that on the drive manufacturer's web site.  This will make sure your drive has the latest write-strategies, which tell the drive how much power to use when writing, and all that.

The next thing to do is check your discs after writing them.  Under "Tools" you should find DVD Info Pro (I believe it's still included with EMC 9, I'm not at my home machine).  In there, you can do a Test for CRC errors.  If it finds any CRC errors, then make sure you don't delete the files off your HD yet.  Get some different brands of discs, and do the same test.  With any luck, you'll find a brand that works well and doesn't give you any CRC errors.

My guess is that either a firmware update, or a disc brand change will solve your problem.

To try and recover data that is giving you CRC errors, you could try getting a utility like CD Roller or ISO Buster which use different techniques for recovering data from difficult-to-read discs.

Hope that helps!

The problem you are having in that your backup copy, you are attempting to copy, contains read/write errors (CRC- cyclic redundancy check errors). The most likely cause of these CRC- cyclic redundancy check errors is the use of not very good blank Media, that the backup copy was recorded on.
Run the disc in DVDInfoPro, disc quality check and PI PO test.
Post the media ID and disc maker from info pro and the test results.
Make sure you have the latest firmware for your drive
burn at the rated speed for your media (don't set to "max")
Use Taiyo Yuden Premium or Verbatim Data Life Plus media.

Another possible cause of the CRC error is that the drive is simply not working properly.  If the firmware update doesnt fix it, start shopping for another drive.

You are correct, John.  Most CRC errors that I have seen are due to the burner being dead and not being able to read the media.
