New install on a new system.  Media Import appears to start then goes blank????????????? I have repaired the install twice, same outcome????????  I try to open from multiple locations.  System and software versions below.

I removed Wild Tangent and the RealPlayer, then stop internet and Trend PCcillin.

I was able to launch Media Import. But the program closes if I select the Photo or Video buttons.  It appears to work when Audio is selected.

After the program crashes or closes no applications exist in the Task Manager.

It seems you can at least open it now. What are you trying to import? Try putting a DVD in your drive open import click video and click the drop down arrow, and choose the drive.
I would run a spyware malware cleaner for traces of the Wild Tangent program!
Open task manager and click the processes tab at top. On the bottom left of that window, it gives # processes. How many are showing?

I tried to impot from DVD, but the Media Import crashes shortly after selecting the Video button (same with Picture), the hard drive appears to run then the program crashes, no trace of the program in Task Manager.  I also am showing 89 processes running in Task Manager.  

I am wanting to import DV from a Sony DV cam by firewire.  I have made a DVD by the Plug and Burn from my DV Sony, I just want to Import Video for editing and make personal DVD's etc.  

Is Adware ok? I have run it and only find cookies.  Hope this helps.

Spybot search and destroy and Lavasoft Adware are a good combo. Dump the cache and cookies before the scan.

89 processes running in Task Manager. Is a bit much! You need to go below and look through your startup programs. Uncheck  ones in msconfig that don't need to run. I get my XP SP2 down to 38 to 40.
Try to open media import again.
When you bootup open task manager and see how many processes are running. After you use the pc and open and close programs recheck task manager and see how many are running. Always reboot before the video project, encoding it, and burning it.
