I'm new to DVD stuff and haven't been able to find an answer to my type of problem.

I have EMC9 with a Maddog MD-16X3DVD9 and can burn CD's and play DVD's just fine. But when I try to burn a Data DVD it fails after about 6MB with a media error:

Sense 03 ASC:0C ASCQ:00 (Command 2A).

I can't find info on this error. I've also tried Creator Classic as well with the same results. I'm using Imation Video/Data 16x DVD-R's. My system is a 1.1GHz Celeron w/512MB RAM and WXP Pro with all updates. The DVD Recorder is a master on it's own IDE channel.

Any clues as to what my problem could be? I've even tried dropping the burn speed down to 4x with no luck.

Thanks

Your computer should be able to burn DVD's with this software, but it doesn't meet the minimum specs to do anything else.

Try updating the firmware for your burner, and try a different brand/type of media.

I have a MadDog burner, but not that model. Check the firmware on this page. There are two models. Make sure you have the correct one.
16X3DVD9-8X APR 06 firmware 1F2
16X3DVD9-8XB OCT 06 firmware 1F1

To check your existing firmware version, run the Roxio Disc & Drive Utility.

The burner came with 1F1 but I upgraded it to 1F2 during my troubleshooting efforts. I was very careful about double-checking the model. It's an MD-16X3DVD9-8X. and shows up in the Device Manager as a MadDog and not an NEC.

If you're using a MadDog, what media brand are you having the most success with?

I know the machine is a bit "processor challenged" but I think I should be able to at least burn a data DVD. I did upgrade burner firmware as part of my efforts. I've also made sure all other software is up to date as well. I just can't seem to find any info that would tell me what the error means.

I'm using Imation Video/Data 16X DVD's. Any suggestions as to a brand that would work better? I'm using Memorex 52X CD-R's for CD use and they work fine.

I'm a Fuji fan. Make sure the label says 'Made in Japan' though. I found a spindle at Besy Buy that said 'made in Taiwan'. I wasn't aware at the time that Fuji had other companeis making discs for them. I haven't had a single bad Fuji burn yet.

As you can see, my drive shows up as MadDog, too, but it's also a rebadged NEC burner.

From what I can see from the MadDog site, the other unit shows up in the Device Manager as an NEC so I'm 99.999% sure I've loaded the correct firmware. CD burning with the unit is great. It's better than my Sony 48X CD Burner which is now disconnected since I have the MadDog.

I'll see about finding some Fuji disks (made in Japan). Hopefully that's the issue but I really would like to find some kind of reference that could explain the error codes.

Try Verbatim for the DVD. The Memorex should be ok for the CD's. And yes, you should be able to burn DVD's with the software, with no problems.

I have used Fuji, also, but they aren't readily available in my area, except int the DVD+RW flavor.

I'm going to try and find both. Between Staples, OfficeDepot, OfficeMAX, Circuit City, Best Buy and CompUSA I should be able to find at least one.

The Fuji discs I have seen lately (Taiwan) were made by Prodisc (ProdiscFO1) the "F" in the MID media ID code stands for Fuji. Not long ago at Best Buy and others, media sleuths knew Fuji and Sony discs with made in Japan were the sought after Taiyo Yuden. Another clue is that with Taiyo Yuden made media, the cakebox bubbles out and is wider at the bottom of the spindle.

There are fake disc's that use Taiyo Yuden MID! These disc's don't have the #'s around the hole or hub of the disc. GGxxxxxx -R, TGxxxxxx +R, (the x represents a #) the other should be a four digit number opposite that.

Today, it is easy to buy the KING OF MEDIA guaranteed (Premium Line) Taiyo Yuden media, made in Japan. Supermediastore.com and Rima.com, $0.32 to $0.42 a disc, with free shipping.

For DL burning Verbatim +R with the MID MKM xxx Mitsubishi Kagaku Media, are the best.

I bought a 5 pack of Sony's (Made in Taiwan) just for grins and they worked. I had to reduce the burn speed to 2x but they worked. I then sold the Imations to a buddy so I wasn't out much.

I ordered a 50 pack of the Taiyo Yuden Premium's this week. $20 with free shipping. Not bad.

Thanks again for the assist. :)

I finally got a chance to use the new Taiyo Yuden DVD-R's.

I've been working on a DVD project and have been able to create the project and burn it to an iso. The iso plays just fine within DiskCopier and I've also tested it with a virtual DVD (MagicISO) and it also plays ok.

I can't burn to a DVD directly from MyDVD. It fails just after I start the burn process.

Burning the iso to a DVD using Disk Copier seems to work but the results are hit and miss. The burn says it's successful and I'm doing very simple stuff. A menu with 3 slideshows. The actual iso is only 300MB but for some reason the DVD's just don't seem to work right. Some burns won't play at all or lock up the DVD player and others will play but some slideshows are corrupted. I burn at 2x and have buffer under-run disabled during the burn.

I guess my setup is ok for burning data DVD's but video DVD's are just too much, even at only 2x.
